Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Hi all

Been having issues with the superhub 2 consistently since it's installation. All connections on the 2.4 ghz band drop regularly throughout the day requiring a reboot of the device. I am the only user in the house who can connect via the 5ghz band and have no such issues, also internet is still accessible via ethernet cable, I have tried changing the channel with the help of inssider to 'free' channels but to no avail.

I have spoken to virgin who say it is a known issue and have agreed to apply credit to the account, however I'd like to know if anybody had any other thoughts on the issue or had experienced this or similar issues with the new hardware, or perhaps problems stemming from sw update.

Cheers

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Have you gpt the 2.4 GHz channel setting to "Auto"? That helps.

Also have you got it set for maximum range (I forget the number)?

Is the SH2 located behind or very close to a TV? If so move it.

From April through August I ran my SH2 in router mode and never had a 2.4 GHz drop.

No probs here like Seph
Set wireless mode to 144 Mbps and Greenfield mode off for 2.4GHz

All settings are as advised. The router currently sits around 2.5m away from the TV which, as far as I can tell, is the nearest source of interference.

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Have you tried a factory reset? You should also consider the other pc settings as well, it may not be the SHUB 2. For example, have you updated the drivers, what link speed are they connecting at?. How far away are the other PC's, what is the signal strength? What version of windows, is it fully patched? Have you tried going to the manufacturer of the wifi cards instead of the PC maker as generally I find that companies such as Dell have outdated drivers.

Here is a good place for drivers:

Get Netstumbler for testing wifi

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

It's most certainly not a problem on the receiving end, I worked diligently to ensure that before I contacted virgin. There are over 7 devices that this is currently affecting all with different hardware configs and operating systems, my own device the only one which supports 5ghz is also affected on the 2.4ghz band. On the 5ghz band at peak times I generally get around 40-50 mbs and at off peak times up to 90mbs.

I have tried resetting the device but it's no good, the virgin media rep i spoke to on the phone acknowledged it as a known problem.

All hardware and corresponding sw that I use I have checked for any issues and is always kept up to date.

Well if you have tried everything, what do you expect us to suggest? I have thought out of the box for a number of other possibilities. I would suggest asking for a replacement! Other than that purchase another router.

I just find it hard to comprehend that you have 7 devices all dropping 2.4ghz and or it to be a known issue for the SHUB 2.

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

In my opinion it's interference from somewhere, but a suggestion such as updating drivers is not out of the box thinking other than in the literal sense of the hub itself. I'm really just looking to see if anyone else has encountered such an issue.

The majority of the devices are laptops of the 6 other people I share a house with and the various phones they have all of which lose connection in that the connection is lost and attempting to restore connection results in no internet access until the box is reset and yet the 5ghz connection and wired connection remain to be functional.

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Do any of the laptops' logs actually state a reason for the disconnect?

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Nothing in any of the event logs, usually the network after disconnect is visible and can be connected to but it is unrecognised and unable to access the internet.

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Sounds like a firmware or hardware problem with the Superhub then. Which is not uncommon

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

I got new super hub 2 as it was given to me free today by senior techical guy as my old super hub was overheated

The wifi 2.4G is far better than 5G in long distance. Poor wifi on SH2 in my view.

2.4 will always have better range and penetration than 5. As much as they would probably like to, Virgin can't change the laws of physics.

Re: Wifi Problems Superhub 2

Senior Tech guy say to me power level on downstream are fine within spec between 0.00dB and 4.00dB and upstream between 45dB and 47dB.

I feel SH2 is no real difference to old SH in wireless performance. Pretty the same.

Incorrect. 5Ghz allows ten times more transmit power than 2.4Ghz which more than makes up for the "laws of physics" range deficit. They just have to stop making cheap equipment.
