Foreign Hauliers charged for using British roads

Quote:
The HGV Road User Levy Act became law today paving the way for a fairer deal for UK hauliers.
Most EU states already charge lorries for using their roads which means that British vehicles have to pay to drive in Europe, while foreign lorries can drive in the UK without paying for the wear and tear they cause on the roads.
The new charge is supported by UK businesses and will be introduced in April 2014. The levy will be a time-based charge of up to £1,000 a year or £10 a day and will apply to lorries weighing more than 12 tonnes, using UK roads.
Quote:
UK hauliers will pay an annual or a six monthly charge for each lorry at the same time and in the same transaction as they pay its Vehicle Excise Duty. Foreign hauliers can pay daily, weekly, monthly or annual charges. Non-payment of the charge will be a criminal offence, which could result in a fine of up to £5,000.

This has been on-off for about a decade as far as i know and it is about time it was introduced .Now all we need to make sure is that the extra revenue is used on our roads and not swallowed up in general taxation

It will be swallowed up. The treasury doesn't ring-fence tax revenues.

I was hoping that the extra revenue may stave off the threat of more toll roads

I am all for this even taxing those who come over in cars.

Could we not do car one at say £20 for year and £1 a day.

However the only slight worry dont think only one. That what about those delivery of products to uk. Surely this could be then end up costing businesses/consumer more for delivered items.

Although this inturn is could aid british haulers get oversee's jobs so might be good for haulage companies.

Another is what others raised where will money go. Will we get pothole windfall.

Oh so the men in their lives aren't equally feckless?

I suspect that French lorry drivers will just go on strike.
