SuperHub - Power Supply
Hi all,
Upgraded to 50Mb / Tivo at the end of January and last night a second Superhub power adapter has died. The first packed up after only 2 months so the 2nd one has only lasted 2/3 months.
Are there known issues with Superhub the power supply ?
regards
TrevP

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
The most common complaint is that some make a high pitched whistling noise.

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
buuuuuuuut, I would ask whether it is the power supplies/adaptors which are just poo or if there is something wrong with the shub which is causing it. I would ring up and explain that 2 is unacceptable and you don't want a replacement mains adaptor, you want a new shub along with the power adaptor.

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
If memory serves me right a certain ex-VM employee who was a regular poster here and great SH fan was at pains to point out that VM didn't stock spare power supplies as it wouldn't be cost effective to do so (??!!??) and could only ship complete SH+PSU packages.

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
Sorry to bring up an old thread but I got a hub 2 days ago and just noticed this whistling noise. I called Virgin there send me another PSU. Has this not been resolved yet? just worried that it could be dangerous.

Definitely not true, I've had 2 replacement PSUs on their own sent to stop whistling noise. I've also had a new Super Hub & PSU in a box ... but that PSU also whistled.
If you take a look over at the official VM forum they are sending out dozens of PSUs, but seemingly all still whistle, despite someone thinking they had removed all the faulty stock.

If you look at his post date, back in June they were not sending individual power supplies out as far as I'm aware.

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
When I upgraded from 10M to 60M I was sent a SH. I was surprised to hear a high pitch whistle from the PSU. I thought something was wrong but everything was working OK.
Rather than call VM for a replacement (that was before I knew it was almost 'normal' to have a noisy PSU), I got my own. I got a slightly higher rating IIRC 2.5w (original 2w). No more noise, runs cool. happy bunny.

I know exactly what you mean, but age does have some benefits

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
I upgraded from a 255(?) modem yesterday to a "shiny" new super hub and both hub and power supply are belching out a high pitched squeal. I can barely hear the hub but the power supply is very noticeable, and funnily on an age related note, my kids describe them both as very loud.

Re: SuperHub - Power Supply
It's a known problem that the power bricks are noisy, you should be able to get it replaced just explain that its a faulty power brick.
