Slower than normal upload speed, slowish browsing too
Hey all
Since early Monday I've had problems with the speed on my upload, I'm trying to upload something via FTP and I'm only getting 190KB/sec max, I've tried alternate methods and its the same, I've also experienced rather slow browsing today as well.
Anyone else in the same boat?
Here are my status from the modem config screen.
General Configuration
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Number of CPEs : 1
Baseline Privacy : Enabled
DOCSIS Mode : DOCSIS 3.0
Config File : Va68fa62e5dcad19b.cm
Primary Downstream Service Flow
SFID : 61410
Max Traffic Rate : 111000000 bps
Max Traffic Burst : 10000 bytes
Min Traffic Rate : 0 bps
Primary Upstream Service Flow
SFID : 26003
Max Traffic Rate : 5120000 bps
Max Traffic Burst : 16320 bytes
Min Traffic Rate : 0 bps
Max Concatenated Burst : 16320 bytes
Scheduling Type : Best Effort
Hope you can help, if you need any more info let me know please.
Thanks in advance

Re: Slower than normal upload speed, slowish browsing too
1) Are you using a shub or vmng300?
2) Can you post your power levels (under the connection tab on the shub)
3) I wouldn't expect to get much over what you are getting now on ftp because it is a single connection to a server rather than making multiple connections on something like torrents. 200k/sec is good going for one upload, it is one third of your upload speed.

I can do a single upload at several hundred megabits over the internet, though of course not on my home connection. Similarly on my home connection, 2.2MB/sec is easily achievable with one upload, out of a theoretical maximum of 2.4
One upload being limited to 190KB/sec suggests congestion, traffic shaping, or misconfiguration.

1) I am using the VMNG300, sorry should've mentioned that before.
2) Here are the Upstream power levels
Channel Type 2.0 N/A N/A N/A
Channel ID 34 N/A N/A N/A
Frequency
(Hz) 35800000 N/A N/A N/A
Ranging Status Success N/A N/A N/A
Modulation 16QAM N/A N/A N/A
Symbol Rate
(KSym/sec) 5120 N/A N/A N/A
Mini-Slot Size 4 N/A N/A N/A
Power Level
(dBmV) 36.75 N/A N/A N/A
T1 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T2 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T3 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T4 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
This is what you were wanting right?
3) Ever since I got 50mbit (and now 100mbit) my upload speed has 95% of the time has been at 500Kb/sec at least, now its dropped to like 170 max...
Hope the power levels show something
Thanks

I just had a look at the power level on my downstream and thats like 1.35 dBmV but my Upstream is 36.75 ? woah, is that correct? lol

You would have laughed your ass off if I hadn't just noticed this post was from you as was about to click submit reply. I didnt read it properly and thought it was a reply from simcut and I have just typed out a messive reply explaining how there is no way he could be uploading at 2.2mb/sec and how he must be getting his bits confused with his bytes

Your downstream is fine, the power should be between -3 and +7 so 1 is awesome. Your SNR at 36 is optimum as well. The only concern is your upstream power at 36 because the I think the absolute minimum is 33. Mine has always been between 48-52. I think it is alright as long as the street cab is pretty much next to your house.
Qas has made a good point about congestion and shaping though. Next time you try uploading at only get 180k stop the upload then go to www.speedtest.net and run a couple of tests from different servers and see what your upload speed is (in mbits). If it is congestion you'll get the same result which will be about 1.5mbits but if it is shaping then you'll get full speed on the speed test and it will report 5mbits

Re: Slower than normal upload speed, slowish browsing too
Must be shaping then, sorry I should've mentioned sooner, the speedtest comes out always at normal speed (5mbit). What can I do? this didnt happen before.....

The plot thickens, just did a speed test and got this:-
so now I'm getting 10mbit instead of 100.....hmm.
time to do a modem restart methinks? I did get a Superhub delivered but I've read so many bad things about it I'm not ready to try it yet.

Re: Slower than normal upload speed, slowish browsing too
the shub isnt going to make any difference whatsoever so dont even bother trying it. Your 10mbit down is very interesting because even if you was stm'd it should only go down to 50mbit.
Taffic shaping is a different kettle of fish and I am wondering if they are doing on ftp traffic if they think it is how people are uploading files to one another (even though they say they dont shape ftp). Shaping isnt supposed to be in effect in the morning so I suggest you try a chunky upload before lunchtime and see what you get.

Re: Slower than normal upload speed, slowish browsing too
i dont want to ruin your current stability so think about this before testing. have you tried to hard reset the modem? have you tested to rule out a router if you have one causing issues? have you cleaned your system temp files etc. ?

It was congestion. Simples.
