Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
DVD recorder is 5 years old. Don't know whether this makes a difference but just can't get programmes to copy on to it from V+ HD box. No-one at Virgin can help and one lady said that I must have an HD ready DVD recorder to do it. Surely this is nonsense as the programmes I've recorded onto the V+ box aren't even from HD channels.
I want to be able to record football matches on Sky Sports for my father who's in his 80's. Before V+ was installed, I had the old Virgin box which allowed me to record directly from the TV straight to my DVD hard drive and I could then transfer them onto disc for him.
Can anyone help please?

Are you using the VCR/DVD scart connection from the V+? Is the V+ in HiDef mode?

Yes there is a scart connection between the V+ and DVD and the V+ is presumably in Hi def mode because I want to watch Hi def. After all that is why I got the bloomin' thing!

Put scart in VCR socket of stb and av1 on DVD. Tell your DVD rec to record av1 and that should be it

Ok I will try that later when everyone's finished watching and pray that it works. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
 Hi There,
I'm at loss!!!. I have tried many times topy programs off my New V+ box to my DVD Recorder with no joy. I have been on the phone with Virgin trying to record but with no sucess. I would appreciate if anyone can help??. I would just like to copy over onto the DVD Hard drive programmes recorded on the V+ box and then edit them and burn to disc as I used to do with the old Virgin box. The new box doesn't have a co-axil aerial output? does this matter or does the scart carry teh signal? The V+ box is leading a charmed life as it's critical most days of the week with recordings for the kids.
I look forward to any help.
Cheers::

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
You need to use a SCART lead connected from the "VCR" SCART socket on the V+ to the DVDR. Make sure you are selecting the correct input to record from on your DVDR - the manual should tell you how. (Tip: to test it is working, you don't need to use the Copy to VCR/DVD function on the V+. Without using it should should be able to record live TV to a DVD instead).
When you are set up ready to do the copy, get the DVDR ready to record. Then on the V+, go to the V+ menu, select V+ Extras, then Copy to VCD/DVD. Highlight and press OK to select the programmes you want to copy. Use the blue key to move between pages. When you've selected them all, press yellow, start recording, and lastly press OK.
ps. Welcome to the forum!

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Thank You Spiderplant.
I'l try that cabling later on my return home. Where it goes wrong with me is trying to tune in my DVD to receive the menu of the V+ box. Just to see what it is I'm going to be recording via the DVD seems to be the problem??
I take it it is possible record onto the DVD Hard Drive and edit later??, or does it have to go straight to disc?? Non of terh programmes recorded were copy protected, tehy were straight off BBC or STV!!.
Thanks again.
James.

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
In my experience of using the SA version of the box is that you would/could have the TV scart socket into the TV and the VCR scart into the DVD recorder. I don't have an LCD tv so I don't know if that affects the output but if I remember correctly, as soon as you switch to HDMI the scart is disabled? Maybe it only disables the TV scart and not the VCR scart?
So your problem is maybe two-fold in that you have the HDMI enabled and also connected the wrong scart.
Also must point out that you will not see the menus or anything via the VCR output, just the output picture. For example, many occasions I record from red button and then I think the remote is duff when I press back or menu then realise that I'm on the VCR scart and not TV scart! lol
The way I do it is to select 4 one hour episodes e.g. The Wire. Queue them up to play one after another via the TV scart using the "copy" facility in the Virgin menu and press record on the appropriate AV channel on the DVD recorder. Once you start the copy process, the queued progs will play via the VCR scart but enable you to use the TV scart to watch normal tv.
I then get all 4 episodes recorded one after another and then get rid of the trailers etc and chapterise and burn to DVD disk.
Again, hopefully someone can say whether the VCR scart is still usable in HDMI mode as I don't know.
Hope you found this helpful.

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I don't have a DVD record function on my DVD player but I do on my desk top PC , is it possible to use that instead or are there not the correct sockets/ cables to do this. If I do have to have a DVD recordable player , which is the cheapest and best make to buy as I have to un-install it in 2-3 days.
Thanks

It should work if you have a video capture card in the PC. You'd probably need a SCART to phono lead too.

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
I know you can't record HD programs from Virgin HD box and output to DVD Recorder, but does using the RGB Scart copy over a better picture in terms of sound and vision if you copy an HD version of the same program instead of it's SD equivalent? Has anbody experimented with this?

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hi there Spiderplant,
Sorry I haven’t replied sooner re the recording of programmes from my Samsung V+ box to my DVDR.
I tried several times but was unsuccessful in getting anything recorded. I did manage to see the V+Menu and all the stages you go through to record onto the DVD hard Drive, but to no avail.
Am I right in saying that some recorders don’t support this function?? Philips in particular? I have a Philips DVDR3440H. It’s a great machine (albeit old) and does everything you ask it to do, except receive a programme via the connection.
Am I just not connecting the Scarts properly?? or do I need a specific type of recorder??:
I look forward to your (or any other reply)
JKMurray

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
Hi all,
I'm Viv and I'm new to all this.
The reason I joined this forum was to see if anyone had any idea how I could copy my recorded progs from my v+ hd box onto a dvd recorder. I'm an older girl and technology is difficult for me to grasp at times but i'm trying hard.
I've read a few of the messages on the forum about this subject and it seems i'm not the only one having problems, but I don't really understand some of the replies.
What I need is some kind, patient person to tell me what I need to do, in basic terms.
I have tried attaching a scart lead from my v+ box to my seperate dvd recorder and although having followed the instructions in the Virgin booklet and seemingly things were happening, when I came to play the dvd nothing had been recorded.
Can anyone help please.

Re: Copying from V+ HD box to DVD recorder
JK: I've looked up the manual for your DVDR and it definitely looks like it should be able to do the job. You should have the V+ connected to the EXT2 socket on the DVDR, and select EXT2 as the recording source. Is that what you are doing?
Viv: I suspect you have much the same problem. What make & model recorder do you have?
ps. Welcome to the forum!
