We are getting work done in the main room - I was wondering if it's possible to plug the modem of our Internet into the cable upstairs that currently goes into our second box.
Is this possible? Downstairs it's a simple splitter that splits into tv and modem but I'm not sure if the 20mb broadband would work from the upstairs connection?

Yes. I've just moved the SH from one room to another that has a cable coming in. You might see slightly lower downstream power levels if the feed cable upstairs is longer than the one downstairs.
