New VM Cable connection/Router settings?

Hi

I’m due to get connected to VM Cable Broadband on the 11 August (60 meg service) and I’m just trying to get some information together in readiness for my switch to cable broadband.

From what I’ve been reading in the forums, it would seem that the wireless performance of the Virgin Media Super Hub is not all that impressive, but I intend to use my recently acquired TP-Link WDR4300, dual band router for the wireless side of things so I’m guessing my best option is to just use the modem part of the Super Hub and let the TP-Link router do the rest?

The WDR4300 has a number of options to select for the WAN connection… at the moment with my ADSL connection, it’s using the Dynamic IP setting (the TP-Link router automatically found all the settings and was very easy to set up) but of course it has a number of different options to select, depending on the type of service.

Besides the Dynamic IP setting, it also has the following WAN settings and I’m just wondering if anyone can point me to the correct one to use with VM cable broadband …. The other options are…

Static IP
PPoE/Russia PPoE
Big Pond Cable (or Heart Beat Signal)

I normally use Google’s public DNS servers (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) and wonder if it’s ok to continue using them or if it’s best to use VM’s own DNS servers?

Thanks in advance for any help/info

Re: New VM Cable connection/Router settings?

Just put the Superhub in modem mode and your router will work as it does now.

Re: New VM Cable connection/Router settings?

Hi,

Your TP Link router should work fine as you have it set (DHCP and Google DNS).

When the Virgin Superhub is installed it will pull down the latest firmware - You'll need this to be able to put it into 'Modem only' mode.

Once updated and put into Modem mode, turn the Superhub off, connect an ethernet cable from the LAN port closest to the coax cable to the WAN port on your router. Turn on the Superhub and then turn on the router.

Hope the install goes OK!

Re: New VM Cable connection/Router settings?

Many thanks for the replies... that's great info.

The TP-Link has worked like a dream with my ADSL connection and gives great Wi-Fi so it looks like it should have no problems working with the VM connection.

Thanks again for the info... cant wait for the new connection on the 11 Aug' now :-)
