Service Issues

Hi,
New to Cable Forum but it has been in my favourites for ages so here goes:
Have been extremely happy with Virgin Media (nee NTL) for many years and then from last Friday (July 6th) lost internet and was told they have network issues in the Bromley/Orpington area, KENT.
Since then it has been up and down like a yo-yo thus knocking their previously 100% service record.
(a) Any one else experiencing this? (b) is this occuring because of speed upgrades?

Re: Service Issues

if they have network issues it will be affecting everyone else but it defo isnt happening because of the speed upgrades. You have tagged this thread as adsl and it is only cable which is getting the speed upgrades. Without going into a very long story, you can think of the speed on cable as being pretty much unlimited compared to adsl and the limiting factor is basically what VM restrict you to. Rather than just increasing everyone's speed which the network cant handle atm, they are having to do upgrades first so the extra capacity is there so when they do upgrades us, we can actually achieve the speed across the network. Buuuuuuut, adsl is completely different and your speed is impeded by a number of factors. They might be doing some maintenance work in the area but it wont be upgrade work with respect to speed. If you would like a fast connection (as adsl is very limited) and you area isnt cabled by VM, I strongly suggest you see if BT Infinity is available in your area because it kicks ass.

Re: Service Issues

Sorry. I am on Cable (put it in the wrong thread...can you move to the correct thread?...can't see how to do it.)
Interested in BT because VM have been putting prices up and up so interested in your comment General Maximus. Just got to wait until it arrives in our area. Do BT use their own optic fibre network or do they utilise the VM/NTL/Nynex network placed in our area many years ago?

Infinity is fibre to the (telephone) cabinet. That fibre goes from the cabinet directly back to the telephone exchange and is all installed and owned by Openreach (a BT owned company). From the exchange back to the ISP data centres it's the same fibre network which is used for BT based ADSL although it has almost certainly been beefed up to meet the demands of the Infinity product.
