Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

I know that a lot of people aren't fans of the super hub, but I am not here slamming it as I don't think it is a problem with the hub itself, i think it may be something else.

For the last few days of an evening after downloading large amounts of data using Bit-torrent i.e. 70GB, I keep losing my internet connection. I need to turn my super-hub on and off again, but it will keep losing the connection. I have noticed that if I exit Bit-torrent then I don't lose my connection, but I am not sure whether this is just a coincidence. Is this because of the amount of data I am downloading using Bit-torrent and my super-hub is turning off the connection on purpose or is this something else?

Does anyone have any answers?

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

There's another fairly current thread on precisely this already. In that case the Superhub was in modem mode making it a little puzzling as apparently the only change was from a modem to the Superhub with the same router.

In your case I'd guess that the most likely problem is the number of connections you are running your client on is exceeding the internal connection table in the hub and causing it to hang. Look in the torrent client settings and reduce the maximum connections. I can't suggest a number as I don't run either torrents or the Superhub but I'd suggest even the Superhub must be able to cope with a hundred or so connections.

It's not the number of torrents it's the number of connections...

That would slow the download of the torrents though wouldn't it.

i don't think it is bit torrent as it was only downloading at about 12 Mbs, and I have before today had 6 downloading at about 10 Mbs. I called VM and they said that they couldn't find anything wrong with my router or the network, but if it happens again then i shouldn't reset the router and give them a call.

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

Each torrent download can have hundreds of connections open. Speed is irrelevant. It is the number of open connections.

Just try a quick google and you'll find the same advice I've given you hundreds of times over. If you want to ignore it fine - just keep rebooting your Supehub or if you really want to waste your time call VM with it hung - pound to a penny the next agent will start his script off with please reboot your Superhub.

Have you even looked at the other thread here which linked to?

I have looked at the other thread, and I have just had the same problem while I haven't been downloading any torrents. Like I said I didn't think it was that as I have downloaded much more than what was downloading and never had the problem, so I could quite reasonably presume it wasn't the problem you were talking about.

If the torrent client was still active then it would have been seeding. If it wasn't then the topic of your thread is incorrect - it should just be "Keep losing internet connection" which could be just about anything.

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

The Superhub even in modem mode still performs >layer-3 (IP and connection orientated) functions.

As did the old VMNG300 modem which used to crash in the same manner.

My bet goes on yet another firmware bug that causes the Superhub to crash under load.

Interesting. Maybe explains the other thread then.

In this one it's just the Superhub and the only thing in question is if there is anything that can be done to stop it crashing. As the original post says it's when running torrents then the obvious answer is to reduce the maximum connections the torrent client can use. If it isn't torrents than all bets are off as anybody with a Superhub on VM is stuck with it and the only way to escape it is to leave VM.

I always remove torrents as soon as they have downloaded, so it wasn't Bit-torrent.

I have spoken to VM and they are sending me a new super hub out, they also suggested doing a hard reset as it may be a firmware issue.

How would you know when the last firmware update was installed on the shub?

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

The superhub will fall over if you try to torrent with the firewall switched on.

or do the proper thing and buy a router and stick the SH into modem mode. a simple d link 615 on ebay for a tenna will do nicely. firewall on!

Re: Keep losing internet connection with Bittorent?

Hi thenry

Sorry to crash the thread! I'm having the same problems - as it appears is almost everyone with one of these shoddy "super" hubs (oh the irony!).

Using a dlink 615 seems a good plan. I'm just looking on ebay and there appear to be D2 versions and D4 versions. I'm not very tech savvy and wondered if you might know the difference, and whether both are likely to be pretty much plug-and-play with the hub once I've dropped it in to modem mode?

Thanks very much for your help
Mark
