E4200 help

Hi all.

Please treat me as a total dumbass. I'm currently going spare having not had the internet for over a week. I got the linksys E4200 today. My vm sh is in modem mode and the router is all good and connected but no internet.

I am clearly being exceptionally stupid. Could someone walk me through it? Maximus are you there?!!

Not tried the Superhub in Modem Mode myself, but if it's andything like a standalone modem you need to power it off and back on everytime you change the device directly connected to it.

Superhub LAN Port #1 (must be this port, nearest the VM feed cable connector) connect the the Linksys WAN (internet) port.

Linksys LAN port (any one) can connect to your computer).

Seriously. I'm going mental here.

Why cant I get my effin internet to work?!!

My router is connected correctly to the hub, setup finds the router. It says that my internet connection is lost. As in the physical connection. It advised me to check the cables. Im starting to wonder if it is the physical line now.

This new router is supposed to be amazing and I cant effin use it! Pardon my language, Im getting seriously wound up here.

Now its saying it cannot connect to dns server. Im using windows 7.

Yeah finally. Had a very helpful young fella from virgin media come over.

He adjusted my upstream which was a bit high. Router works fine but my speeds are ok, not amazing. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Speedtest.net gives me 20 on the down but that's not a definitive guide. Torrents are on average 1-2 mbps which is ok. I wanted 5 plus but maybe I'm greedy.

Also I'm scared to turn off the hub and router now in case it stops working. Are you meant to keep them on all the time anyway?

FYI mate, Im not in modem mode. He said that modem mode doesnt work for everyones router. Whether he is wrong or right is a different matter, Im just glad I have working internet!

Lol stupid dumbass me was doing this on wireless. Just wired in my laptop to my router and guess what, I went up to 75 mpbs.

if that is what he has told you then he doesnt know what he is talking about, and if you dont know what you are doing either then I bet he has royally screwed you over. You have got the Rolls Royce of routers and basically what you have let him do atm is get a tow cable and hook it up to the back of a Skoda.

If the shub isnt in modem mode then it is still handling all the routing and wireless which makes having the E4200 pointless. If your connection issues were actually down to upstream power problems then you should be able to put the shub in modem mode no probs now and the E4200 should take over. Where do you live roughly?

Do you mind walking me through it? When I put the sh in modem mode then I guess I wire the hub to the router as usual, and then wire the router to my laptop, go to the router settings page?

Ah its ok mate, think I sorted it. Put the SH in modem mode, waited for it to reboot, then turned it off for 2 mins and turned it on again with the router wired into the port nearest the main cable. The thing is, the speedtest I do is not very different to what I got from the SH in normal mode when on wireless. So its not really an improvement.

Its also created a guest network with a similar name to the one I gave to the router network and its open and unsecured, which Im not happy with. Any ideas?

At least it works, but I was hoping for higher speed tests scores.

you can then setup how you like including disabling guest etc.

what you have got to remember is that your Rolls Royce is fully featured and far more customisable than the shub. Guest networks are great although I don't think you would have a lot of use for it but along with everything else, it si a feature you can disable. Don't be afraid to have a nosey around the router configuration, some stuff is self explanatory and there is a lot of other stuff you dont have a clue about; most of the settings though you can leave as default because it works as it is (in contrast to the shub) which is the beauty of it. You can click on the help button on every page and it will explain what each of the sections are for and what it all means.

If you want a hand with anything like setting up your wireless and stuff pm your phone number and I'll ring you tonight and talk you through it.

Btw, you cant rely on speedtests anymore. There is no way your router is throttling you. The best thing you can do is give it a blast on newsgroups if you use them or go to www.gamershell.com and download 10 1gb+ files from a gigabit servers and add up your download speed just to prove you are getting the speed. My speed test always come back as bang on 50mbit but I have no probs downloading at 12mb/sec = 96mbit.

Hmmm I have tried that mate, I got ten files on the go, around the 1-2gb mark and I got one of them getting 2mb/sec and the others really poor speeds, like terrible.

Maybe my BitTorrent settings arent right.

setup a ping monitor on thinkbroadband. allow ping response on your linksys router (General will know where that is) then ' Share Live Graph ' then ' Generate ' then post everything below

are you downloading the files through torrents? If so, you can only download as fast as the peers you connect to can upload. I was talking about http downloads from dedicated servers. And when you do it, ideally you want to close your torrent client to free the connections up goin in and out of your router and ensure your upstream isnt saturated.
