OX12 Issues

Hi all

I came here from the official VM forums and would really appreciate if someone could give me some expert advice.

Background is I'm on the 20 Meg BB, currently using a black VM branded modem connected to a Belkin router. I'm a long term customer of over 10 years on this current connection, and well versed in occasional connection problems!

My issue is for the last 2 weeks I'm having consistant connection issues, often showing as an initial "spiking" of my speeds, and eventually a full disconnection. It's normally in the evenings, between 7-9pm. Usually this resolves after a short (10-30min) period, and a modem/router reboot, but can be longer.

I've had issues with signal levels in the past, but nothing of recent (2yrs+). I've had attenuators (?) fitted on previous occasions, on different modems, and also had them removed!

There was an issue with the cabinet on my street corner around 4 years ago, where a metal cover had come loose internally and was affecting my connection, I think it was to do with amplification but I can't really remember. This was noticable as my issues always coincided with colder/wetter weather, and my service was markedly better after the engineer visit.

Anyway, I've provided my current stats, I'm assuming power levels again but will of course provide any furthur information as requested. Note that the event log probably coincided with me changing the wireless channel number as a precaution this evening.

OS is Windows XP SP2. Wireless connection.

Basically should I just wait it out or is my problem likely more local and in need of an engineer?

It is definitely worse late afternoons and evenings although not exclusive to these times. Any further information please ask.

Your upstream is seems high, maybe that's the problem.

Phone it in and ask for a Tech to adjust it.

Yes, thats where my thoughts lie if I'm honest. It's something I've habitually had and I think I must teeter on the edge of whats workable, with these problems showing when it goes too high.

Out of interest, I was up late last night, and my connection had been stable for a good 6 hrs. We had a very heavy rainstorm at 3am, and immediately my connection dropped. The modems power light was flashing very fast (several times a second) and obviously my router dropped its connection.

The storm passed, the power light then changed to flashing but much slower. I didn't reset or touch either modem or router. Woke up with the modem light still slowly flashing, but with a connection. Here's the log:

Does this suggest a problem with the street cabinet, the cable itself or the connection point to my house? I can't believe its a coincidence but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

I'm not qualified to make a diagnosis but I would guess it could be any or all of your suggestions.

I think what is certain is that your issue needs to be investigated by a suitably qualified technician.
