I think it is thrill. While there is no reason that Peaches Geldof should need to go and nick anything from Boots (any more than Winona Ryder had to shoplift, or Richard Madeley to go nicking cheap wine from Tesco), I think they get so much given to them that they get slightly jaded. After all, everything is so easy for them.
Before you say anything, I am not asking anyone to feel sorry for them. I am also not attempting to justify their actions (theft is theft no matter how rich or famous the perpetrator).
I think another reason (certainly in Winona's case, from what I have read) is control. People who are that famous often have almost every aspect of their lives controlled by someone else. Sometimes, they go off the rails a little just to assert their own control over some aspect of their lives. Them going off the rails can be something relatively minor like theft or falling out of a club off their head on drugs, or it can be something major, like attempted suicide.
