UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high
UK unemployment rose by 114,000 between June and August to 2.57 million, a 17-year high, according to official figures and the way things are going economically we could well see this rise to the dreaded 3 million figure.

Re: UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high
You seem surprised - do you watch the news at all?
The economy is rock bottom, banks and even countries are nearly bankrupt, were you expecting record employment?
Our priorities are to make sure we don't bankrupt ourselves, and then to hold on tight and ride out the storm whilst trying to steer towards calmer waters
It's not going to be fun - we've had the fun already , we had it on credit, now its time to pay the bill

l am not surprised at all as we are in the deepest economic crisis since the Great Depression and there is no sign soon that we are going to come out of it and by the way l watch the news everyday without fail.

The US could be claiming that their unemployment level has reached the highest since the Great Depression so it's pretty much par for the course that most countries in the developed world will be claiming the same..

Re: UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high
The only way you can stem unemployment is to help create work, and sadly you cannot do that - not with this government.
It is no good bringing out training the unemployed to find work. when there is no work out there, When l was out of work for nearly two years, l was sent to training centres, several times, and all it is, is about how to write CVs, how to cold call on premises for vacancies, this doesn't wotrk aand can sort demorisle you.
The sadness of unemployment is, that the government has ro promote major companies and this rolls out to companies at the bottom.
Unemployment will get worse unless this government do something very quickly to invest in this country.

What is the point of training somebody for a job that doesn't exist?

Re: UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high
This is exactly what the government are trying to do, you cannot invent a job just to please the government.
We are going through a terrible time at present, and it does not help with the cuts the government are making, applicants, some in there hundreds go for jobs, only to be told it has gone, you go to the jc only to be told you are not trying hard enough.
JC run training centres on how to find work, i have been on these schemes, l got nothing, l went looking myself, and l got more interviews that way, then through the JC.
The government has to promote businesses in this country, and this is what they are not doing. I am sure there are people out there that are looking for work, but if there is no work, then how can they find a job.

There's every point .
If a person is unemployed it is very easy to get into a routine of not working or doing anything apart from sitting in the house watching tv with a training scheme the unemployed are at least doing something to ocupy themselves .It is also far better to train people for jobs even if they aren't there yet ,one day they will be when the economy picks up and then we will have a workforce to fill the vacancies .
Training schemes should be looked on as a opportunity not a punishment or a chore .Of course they have to be run properly and recognised by future employers to be worth anything ,which is something the Government need to address

Re: UK unemployment total reaches 17-year high
So far, this government has seen redundancies through severe cuts, companies moving abroad, But what do they say, we will create jobs, we will introduce training programmes.
Once again the government are showing the stupidy of what this government is trying to create - nothing. You cannot create jobs, employers are getting more weaker by the day, unemployment is growing, it is not very nice trying to live on benefit.
It is ok for Cameron and Clegg saying that jobs are out there - wrong. Its about time they woke up and read the local papers. The papers they might read is The Times and the financial times - you won't find a labourers job or a driving job in there.

Arthur your wrong matey government can create jobs very easily if you cast your mind not that far back labour did it very well it was called public sector expansion. As for traiing courses unless there has been a dramtic change the only benefit is for the companys that run the schemes the trainee's usually are not well trained and not helped all that much either.
