Extend a cable

I want to re-locate my TV, but it means the cable from the junction box behind it supplying my broadband modem will be too short. I would therefore like to extend it by around 3 metres. Is the cable and required connectors available and if so, what exactly do i need, and where can i get them? Thanks - Tony

You need to use satellite-grade coaxial cable. If possible, get a pre-made length with the necessary f-connectors moulded onto each end. If you want to make up your own cable, get a reel of satellite grade coax and a pair of screw-on f connectors and be very careful to do a neat job. Dodgy cabling can mess up your own service and your neighbours and VM won't be impressed if your DIY upsets the network.

Also be aware that there's an outside chance that lengthening the cable run in your home will push the signal level coming into your house beyond its tolerance, resulting in your TV or broadband service becoming faulty. If that happens, you need a visit from VM to adjust signal levels (which they will charge you for), or else revert back to the cable length you currently have.

You can get satellite coax and f connectors just about anywhere, B&Q, Homebase, Maplin, in store or online.

Or you could do it properly with proper triple shielded cable that exceeds vm standard.

And buy some Webro hd100 cable from eBay

Problem with sat cable is it doesn't match vm spec its only duel shielded

If you haven't got a superhub, you can 'upgrade' and they should send you a shiney new splitter and 3 metres of coax and a 5 metre network cable in the box with the modem .... for free if you can sweet talk CS

Of course you could do it properly. You could also do it well enough for about half the price and a quarter of the effort.

True, and I hope vm catch up with them and charge them for fixing it, if it effects their neighbours Service.. Twist on connectors are great for SNR.. Especially if you use then wrong sized ones

Note to VM.. Better start using twist on connectors, after all they work for sky and are about a 1/3 of the cost

Quite. Or, they could perhaps consider making a more modest charge for non-fault home-visit services and perhaps watch the number of issues of the kind you describe reduce as a result. Berkett might even find he saves money that way ...

I`m sure when the network guys are on cab clean ups again they will knock on my door if there is a problem.....
