Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

I have a Scientific Atlanta, Explorer V+ Box from Virgin. On the back it has a RF Coax socket which is labeled 'To TV'. Can I connect a standard TV to this using its ariel connection and watch the channel that the V+ box is tuned to on this second TV?

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

On the V+ box you can only use HD or SD, and cannot mix the 2, so if your main TV is using the HDMI them no as the RF is disabled.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

If the second TV has a spare hdmi socket on it you can use a POWERED 2way hdmi splitter to provide signal to your second TV (just make sure the splitter supports hdcp or your end up with audio and no video). I do this and it works a treat

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

The other option is a plug-in modulator connected to the VCR scart.

Thanks to you all for your help.
Nodrogd - My second TV is old - SD only. Does the scart/modulator approach need the main TV to be showing an SD picture for this to work?

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

no the VCR scart works even in HD mode. however if you V+ is a SA one you wont get any menus (epg/mini guide etc) on the second TV.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

So, just let me get this straight. I have a Samsung V+ box, connected to my main tv. However, if I wanted, I could plug another tv in another room into the Samsung V+ VCR Scart (with a long scart cable) and the V+ would successfully transmit picture, menus etc to the second set?

I'm just checking before I spend money on a 10m scart cable.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

Just do it the way I do it with my Sky+HD box, Get some rf cable connect to the tv out on RF2 on the back of your box.

Then connect that to your TV, and using a Tvlink you can change channel form the other room. The scart way means you would'nt be able to change channel from the other room.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

Thanks jb66.

FWIW to the original poster I used to have a Scientific Atlanta V+ box and it happily ran a second tv set hard-cabled via the RF Out port. My main tv isn't HD though, so that wasn't an issue in my circumstances.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

Also if you record something you can choose copy to VCR and that will play your recorded program on the second tv letting the user of the main tv to watch whatever they want.

That's not an issue here as I live on my own, but a top tip for others maybe.

Re: Can I get an RF output to a second TV?

I've used an RF modulator in order to use the existing RF cable, as the scart lead would have to be 15m+ and two walls would have to be re-drilled, plugs taken off and put on again etc. If you can run a scart direct to the second set all the better.
