Re: 100meg speed spikes?

It really depends on the server and the load on the serve at the time; considering a majority servers (how many times can i say server in 1 sentence) Only have 100 mb connections them selves; So if a few people with say 2 - 5 mb/s are testing at the same time thatll knock 30 mb/s off straight away

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

same as what TJS said, the best way to test something like this is to do a sustained transfer on something like newsgroups or torrents when you know you should get 100mbit and then see what you actually get. Doing a few mb off one server isn't a reliable test.

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

Test 1: 2048K took 34 ms = 60235.3 KB/sec, approx 481882 Kbps, 470.59 Mbps
Test 2: 2048K took 24 ms = 85333.3 KB/sec, approx 682666 Kbps, 666.67 Mbps
Test 3: 2048K took 23 ms = 89043.5 KB/sec, approx 712348 Kbps, 695.65 Mbps
Test 4: 4096K took 59 ms = 69423.7 KB/sec, approx 555390 Kbps, 542.37 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 608072 Kbps, 593.82 Mbps

ok I did state my newsgroup speed was erratic and is constantly slower than when i was on 50meg - i was getting on 50 5.9Mbps on average but now its more like 2.2 ~ 5.5 Mbps.

so there is definately something wrong somewhere?

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

I have a netgear WNR2000 router which has a built in firewall and im using the VMNG300 Modem with 100Mb settings - the first day installed it was slow not much faster than my 50Mb line but it was erratic then rarely above 5.9 best speed is in my sig but ive never had that sort of speed from newsgroups it just seems weird.

My Network Interface Controller is an onboard gigabyte 1000Mbps

Gigabit LAN connectivity
The Gigabit network interface delivers a high speed LAN connection with data transfer rate up to 1000Mb/s, providing new generation connectivity for the broadband era. Gigabit LAN is ideally for seamless internet connection such as streaming audio and video contents.

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

I'm not sure why you'd choose to go to an inferior antivirus product just to make sure you get worse speedtest results...

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

I use comodo firewall on my netbook and it doesn't seem to skew the results and it doesnt really slow down the computer much even with the intel atom cpu

don't use anything on the macs other then the built in firewall

Re: 100meg speed spikes?

I had only recently installed kaspersky and didnt even realise it was firewalling ports so I have deleted it and reinstalled AVG - now my speeds are back to normal depending on time of day.

Newsgroups are now pulling 9.7Mbps with a little fluctuation

speedtest results are still showing an inferior connection but the spectrum is more stable as it tests - so thankj you for pointing out kaspersky is crap =)

AVG has done me ok as my system is clean so no reason to use anything else.
