Is this the little icon in the bottom right of the windows screen?
Go into the main control panel and network connections. Check the properties or the LAN connection. Somewhere in there there should be a check box to show icon when connected.

No good installing drivers if the hardware is turned off... Firstly try the bios to see if it's been turned off.. Secondly check the device manager and see if the device is in there.

As far as I can make out, this option is not available with Windows 7. This was a criticism which I passed on to MS.
But if anyone else lnows how to configure please come forward.

Re: no "Local area connection" LAN icon...disapeared. Please help?
I'm thinking the NIC chipset is dead. If it's not showing in Device Manager then that's a real possibility.
Does the laptop have a PCMCIA slot? If it does you could try an NIC card in there as an alternative.

Start, Control panel, Device Manager (You may need to switch to classic view or Large Icons to find it more easily) look for Network Adapters, what's listed there? (You may need to click the + next to it to get a list)
