It might be worth asking if any of your friends or family can get Office through their work with the Microsft Home Use Program. The company I work for (think very large US industrial and financial company) offers a copy for £9.95.
Some NHS trusts sign up to this scheme I believe

Any company which uses Microsoft's Software Assurance licence scheme can offer the Home Use Programme. The price for Office is unbeatable. Over time through my current and previous employers I've bought the 2003, 2007 and 2010 versions.
There are restrictions in the usage licence though. Essentially you can only use the software for as long as you work for the company that offered you the Home Use Programme.
