hi can anyone tell me if i was to buy a 2nd hand box off e bay would it work and recive the channles that i pay 4 on my main box wanting to stick a 2nd box in bedroom thanks in advance

Simple answer: No.
It may be worth ringing CS and seeing what deals are available for a 2nd box at the moment. I rang last week on behalf of the outlaws and was offered upgrade to a v+ and original box moved to bedroom for a one off £49.00 no increase in the monthly and free install.
Could have got them the 500gb Tivo for the same price plus the £3pm extra but they're getting on in years and are used to and happy with the existing epg so didnt want to confuse them.

Buy it then call VM to enable it and see what they say

If you buy a second hand box of Ebay or elsewhere then you will be receiving stolen goods, because at all times the box remains the property of Virginmedia, also the box will not work as it cannot be added to your account, and its only use would be as an expensive doorstop.
Call Virgin and get a box from them that you know will work.
