Dilemma

Well, what do I do now?

I’ve been waiting patiently for the Red button for so long, and now it seems to be finally getting near, and I was feeling positive, guess what happened?

I came home yesterday to find my wife signing up for Sky. I asked all the questions, most notably Broadband Speed, and was told I can receive “up to 20Mb” I didn’t feel too confident questioning him, but my wife was really keen on moving from VM, as she really feels we pay far too much for our services (we get the lot)

Anyway, what it has come down to, is that we are getting the full Sky hit, TV, phone & Broadband, for a lot less than we are paying VM.

It seems we get a lot more channels, cheaper calls, sky player & more HD channels.

Now I’m sure there must be a catch, anyone care to educate me (and my wife) while we have a chance to reconsider?

Thanks

Russ

Re: Dilemma

I think the clue is in the up to 20Mb. Sky use copper cable so you may get a lot less than 20Mb. It depends how close you are to the exchange. Virgin has Tivo while the Sky box is nowhere near as good. Sky has more channels but Virgin are promising more in the future. Also if the Sky box fails outside the warranty period you have to pay for an engineer. While with Virgin although you do not own the box engineer visits are free.

Re: Dilemma

That's a great saving - well done (depending on the BB speed).

Re: Dilemma

Distance from the exchange is key, I've just moved from Vm (30 Meg) to Sky and my broadband speed is just 4 Meg down and 0.5 up as I live quite a way from the exchange, compared to Vm's much higher speed service.

However it's not always about speed and I find the quality (jitter) is a lot better with Sky (for gaming) so I would say it depends also on what you do with your broadband, or more importantly how much bandwidth you consume.

If you are perfectly happy with the services Vm supply (apart from the price), you could have rang Vm retentions to see what they were willing to offer you to keep you with them, or trimmed down your package to suit your budget.

Either way you will probably get a call from Vm sales to temp you to stay, who may be able to match the price Sky have offered.

Just food for thought

Re: Dilemma

Make sure the sky deal is including the higher broadband, not the free one, as the quota on that is small AND the anytime plus comes out of it as well.

And anytime plus has a selection of things, but not the main channels catchup, so to get that back, you'll need a PC to access BBC Iplayer, ITV Player, 4OD etc. - or an Internet TV.

Over £20 per month

I phoned virgin to cancel and they offerd me nothing so i signed up to sky. a week later Virgin called offering me the same as i would have got on sky but at a cheaper price! phoned sky to cancel the install and they made me a better offer...

But ended up staying with virgin as they where cheaper overall than Sky (after i tried to leave) and i know you will always get better broadband from Virgin than Sky, because of how it works...

The only reason (and I mean the only reason) I am still with VM is the broadband,IMO Sky HD is far superior than VM in the television department and Customer Service,as for the landline phone service they are both on a par with each other.........before I get hounded this is MY OPINION ONLY!!

It is all personal choice as many people have Virginmedia broadband and SKY for the television and nothing to be hounded about.

It is unlimited, and fee calls after 7pm and all weekend.

Seems quite good

it is actually £35pm cheaper than I am currently paying to VM, i'd be daft not to give it a go!
