Virgin Media wins court case with Gemstar

Virgin Media has succeeded in the patent dispute brought against it by Gemstar TV Guide. The London High Court rulings call into question the ability for intellectual property rights holder Rovi to enforce its patents both in the UK and with operators around the world

Re: Virgin Media wins court case with Gemstar
Good read and a good ruling, some of the stuff that has been patented in the area of the PVR is just madness and is holding back inovation. At least now that holder of most of the good patents, Tivo, is on board with VM.

They've won the appeal as well

A court has today rejected an appeal by the Rovi-owned Gemstar in a legal battle with Virgin Media over electronic programme guide (EPG) patents

At the High Court ruling, Justice Mann dismissed the case because the technology being disputed was too general, and he further moved to recall Gemstar's patents.

Re: Virgin Media wins court case with Gemstar
I have no sympathy with Gemstar - they always made it difficult for people such as Digiguide to include their VideoPlus codes in TV guides.

Re: Virgin Media wins court case with Gemstar
At last, some sanity - there are a massive number of patents that are totally unjustified.

Re: Virgin Media wins court case with Gemstar
I wonder what will happen to the other tv provider's licensing agreements with Gemstar?

Good question... BSkyB and co are paying them patent royalties and the court has stripped Gemstar of them.
