Broadband Issues

Hey guys, I'm using one of the newer Hub's (Netgear) with our 20Mbps connection. I'm using a MacBook (fully updated) and my mum's on an old 2008 Asus laptop, she uses Wireless G and I use Wireless N.

I noticed earlier when I was downloading updates for my Mac that whenever my mum loaded a webpage on her laptop my net would halt, yet if I load pages on my Mac whilst the updates download it goes perfectly fine.

Is it because she's using a different standard to me? I know the Router can support Wireless N, that's why I kept using it instead of a modem/router combo.

I would post upstream/downstream if you need it, but I might've forgot the password for the hub config panel (and can't remember it for the life of me).

Other info you might need:

MacBook is running Mac OS X 10.6.5, using AirPort Wireless (built in) at 802.11N standard, all with latest updates.
Laptop running Windows 7, all with latest drivers using a Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter (built in) at 802.11G standard.

Now, the thing is too, I also have my phone (Blackberry Curve) hooked up to the broadband, as I setup a guest network to let my phone be connected without having to use the main N connection which my Mac runs on. Does this affect anything?

Would really appreciate the help
Adam.

Re: Broadband Issues

from a wireless point of view they shouldn't be interfering with one another at all, wireless g runs at 2.4ghz (mummy) and your apple will be using 5ghz for n. The thing which i would look at is the ip addresses and maybe assigning some static ip addresses in your router. The two of them are conflicting somewhere and we need to work out where and how.

Re: Broadband Issues

Well if it helps I can drop connection on my Mac every now & then when using my PS3 which uses WiFi as-well even though it sits near enough next to my Hub in the living room.

I've gained access to the router panel (reset) and completely changed the guest network my mobile runs on, so only that uses it. Is it worth using wires to connect my PS3 up?

Re: Broadband Issues

if your ps3 is next to your router you had might as well, you'll get a faster connection anyway.

Have you tried to see if you get the same problem when you use your phone, ps3 and mums laptop? I am wondering if the mac is the weakest link

Re: Broadband Issues

From what I have seen reported your issue seems to be one of the many shortcomings of this device.

I live on my own and only have two machines on my net. One wired and one wireless so I haven't noticed your issue. I have noticed the wireless completely dropping out at what seems to be random times. It's happened twice when torrenting and a few times when not.

Check some of the many threads on the subject at the Help and Support Forum.

Re: Broadband Issues

I know its a long shot but you could try disabling the firewall, I have heard that multiple consoles and the firewall being on can cause problems. Maybe it will carry over to pc's.
