Question DIR-615 dying or something else?

Hi

I lost connection earlier which in itself isn't too unusual (the VM supplied dlink dir 615 seems to need to be told manually to renew it's DHCP from the modem every few days).
However when I tried to access it I couldn't via it's web interface.

At this point the modem was showing all green lights (power, "tick", PC, up and down).
The router was showing green for power, wireless and LAN connections but orange for the Internet.

I rebooted the router, this changed the lights to all green - still no internet or access to it's interface.

I then rebooted the Modem and Router - again no change.
So I hooked up a laptop, which also couldn't access the router interface.

I then dug out my old linksys router, set it to the same MAC as the 615 (using the laptop), connected that in it's place - instant internet (so I'm guessing it's not the modem).

So I then tried resetting the 615 which got access to it's menu's back when I used my mum's laptop.

Connected the 615 to the Modem and got access to the net back through it, at least on the laptop.

Connected my other machines to the 615 and it died again - all lights on green, no access at all (can't even access it's status/admin page).

Disconnected them and rebooted it, connected it to the laptop/modem and it works.
Connect any of the other PC's and all access dies again within a few seconds/minutes, including on the laptop which then gives a DHCP error when told to renew it's IP address.

From what I can see the 615 is failing when it's got multiple devices connected as it doesn't seem to matter what combination of PC's are connected (even my dad's which only has MSN installed other than a couple of games).
But it works at least for a while when there is only one thing using it.

The old router seems to be fine with everything connected to it.

Can anyone else think of anything before I give up and brave VM's phones tomorrow or Monday?

In case it's any help.
My normal network setup involves
1x PC with a fixed IP address - no reliance on the Router for an assigned IP address.
2x PC's with DHCP assigned IP address.
1x router/access point in another room (it's a cheap belkin router I've disabled the DHCP on and set as an access point with a fixed IP on the network*).
1x older PC that when it's on is connected via wireless with DHCP.
The laptop which I have tried both with wireless and wired connections, and is always assigned an IP address by DHCP .

*I've both checked this hasn't had it's DHCP turned on, and the problem persists when it's not connected (so know it's not interfering).

Re: DIR-615 dying or something else?

Try this.

D LINK ROUTER SETUP

The first thing you need to do is a pinhole reset if you look on the back of the router the is a grey reset hole, you take a pen and press it into the router while powered on for 15 seconds..

Then you wait for the lights all to turn green on the router then you look for a D Link network which is unsecured and you then connect to it wirelessly.

Then you go go online and in the address bar you get them to put 192.168.0.1 and press enter/return, you will then be asked for a username which is admin and password which you leave blank, and then click login and they will be presented with a Dlink screen on the left chose wireless setup and then go to manual setup at the bottom and you will be presented with the setup screen

At the top we have Wi-Fi Protected Setup also known as WCN2, remove the Enable Pin tick and then go the Wireless Network Settings section and go to the box with the SSID which by default will be dlink and change it to one of your own choice.

Then click on the security options drop down and choose WPA/WPA2 wireless security enhanced, then the Network key box will appear and in here they enter a password with a minimum length of 8 characters then click save settings and wait for it to finish.

You can now look for their newly named network and connect using their password.

You should now be connected and it should have taken between 5 and 10 minutes to achieve this and the disk will make a nice coaster.

Re: DIR-615 dying or something else?

Cheers

I was hooking directly up to the router via wired and using the 192.168.0.1 admin page (I never use wireless to setup, although i did try connecting to the default dlink wireless a couple of times to rule out the LAN ports dying), it just wasn't working after a few minutes (the router basically stopped doing anything). I've not used a CD to set up a router since I first got a BEFSX41

Sorry I didn't make it clear last night, as I was tired and getting ready to scream at the router:p (90 minutes, and multiple resets and every time I connected a second wired PC up it stopped working)

I'll try another pin reset later, as that got it working for a few minutes last night, but then it stopped working again (without me changing any setting) pretty much as soon as I hooked one of the other machines up via a second lan port.

Re: DIR-615 dying or something else?

If it does not work after a pinhole reset then it will probably need replacing, so call faults and they will run some checks and then send a replacement.

Aye that's what I thought.

I'll try giving it another go tonight, I was planning on doing it yesterday but ended up reinstalling my brothers PC instead (his boot drive died, fortunately that was expected as it's been giving errors so I had a spare on hand).
