Help me understand these Fn keys

Just got a Dell laptop after annoying myself with too much choice and not being able to afford to buy a better one.

I am really, really annoyed by the fact there is no physical volume control on the laptop.

I have just figured out that fn + f7 mutes the volume but it doesn't do it when i'm in Firefox it starts asking about caret browsing.

Is there no way to use a keyboard shortcut while in firefox then?

Re: Help me understand these Fn keys

Which version of FF are you using? Firefox should respect the Fn key on a laptop but it may simply be a bug. As a workaround I'd suggest clicking on your desktop so FF isn't the active application before making volume adjustments.

Re: Help me understand these Fn keys

Doesn't seem to be working at all now. It dind't work the first time til i rebooted when i did all the windows updates.

This is supposed to be a brand new laptop, i don't think bugs are acceptable grrrrrr

It works in WMP but only adjusts the volume in there and not the master volume. Doesn't help when i'm on youtube or wherever. Clicking extra places makes it pointless having the keyboard shortcut anyway as i might aswell just click the volume icon and do it manually.

I am seriously annoyed about it, am even thinking of sending it back under DSR because i used the volume control constantly on my old lappy.

Sorry I forgot to say i'm using Firefox 3.6.12

Also it's supposed to be a HD screen but what does that even mean? Because i've just put this video on side by side with my 4yr old Toshiba and the Toshiba looked better The Dell picture looked quite whitewashed, the Tosh looked richer colours

What about changing your browser?

I was a long term FF user but FF 3.6.* gave me so much grief I dumped it and went back to Slimbrowser.

So far so good, much faster and less hassle.

I think FF has succombed to the dreaded Bloat.

Re: Help me understand these Fn keys

Omg i'm fuming.

Was using the laptop tonight as usual and went off for a sec... came back and the touchpad doesn't work at all. I've plugged a mouse in for now but i'm so angry.

I am going to try reinstalling the drivers but i'm majorly concerned. How does a brand new laptop just stop functioning like that?

I don't know whether to send it back or not.. grrrrrrrrrrrrr

On some laptops you can turn off the track pad with a Fn+ Fx key - on my advent it's Fn & F2.... I'd guess you've turned it off without realising :-)

Yep - had that happen to a few users over the years as well - could be small button by the trackpad as well.
