Subtitle on HD?

Hiya

I am newbie and I have search everywhere on internet about subtitle on Virgin Media but there is no much information about it so I thought this is good place to start.

Recently I got Virgin HD Box - (not Box VD+)

I know majority of you not interesting but I thought I put down small matters about English subtitle for people who can't hear.

I am only interesting in HD channels

108 - BBC HD - have subtitle
113 - ITV1 HD - no subtitle
142 - 4 HD - no subtitle
150 - Five HD - have subtitle
158 - FX HD - no subtitle
429 - Film4 - have subtitle

CATCH UP TV ON DEMAND
BBC iplayer - no subtitle
ITV net player - no subtitle
4 on demand - no subtitle
channel one - no subtitle
HD catch up - no subtitle

I am not sure about Movies on Demand but I suspect no subtitle as well

Just want to know what is happening up to date with those HD channels with no subtitle? I find it strange that Film4 HD have subtitle but 4 HD dont.

Even stranger - 103 ITV1 and 104 Channel 4 have subtitle but HD don't!

I am not sure if you all want me to check all the rest of normal channel?

I would like admin to put this subject about subtitle as a priority check as same up to date virgin tv news?

What everyone think about this as I pay the same as you but I seem to have less access to channels really? Only Film4 HD and Fiver HD stop me sending Virgin box back as it is brilliant to watch. I wish the rest were subtitle though.

I would be very grateful if someone can answer my questions. Thanks in advance.

Hi deafwarrior. Welcome to the forum!

You are correct that the subtitling on the HD channels is patchy. As you may be aware, subtitling is only mandatory on those channels that are sufficiently popular. The channels are reviewed by Ofcom yearly, and this year no HD channels have enough viewers to require subtitling.

Regarding 4HD, the Channel 4 website says:

Will Channel 4 HD have subtitles, signing or audio description?

We hope to get these services on the channel as soon as we can – but probably they won’t be available at inception.

I found this regarding subtitling on ITV1HD.

You can add LIVING HD to your list of HD channels with subtitles, and (as far as I know) all the Sky HD channels have subtitles too.

You'd be doing me a big favour if you could check the subtitling status of all channels. We have this in the forum Articles section, but it's very out of date. If you can provide me with an up to date list, I will update the article.

Thanks for that information!

I will check all channels then and update that article. Although I know some channels have subtitle time to time. I know Sky 1 2 3 have but subtitle sometimes goes missing time to time so will comment on that.

Regarding subtitles on the On Demand services, it's worth keeping an eye on the Access statement that's published by Virgin at www.virginmedia.com/legal

It has the current state progress to subtitles on the service

Just checking out access statement. Iplayer with subtitle this year? Nice but 3 months to go though! It does not state anything about ITV net player and 4oD though. So they are trying to find solution this year due to technical difficulties....

About Electronic Programme Guide (EPG for short) - it says it will be ready in first half 2010 and it is not set up as yet as I have check it out.

But thanks for information as I will be checking it out time to time. When do you think they will update it for 2011?

I'm not sure to be honest. I think that statement was written before the TiVo agreement - which may have changed what is going to happen with the TV platform a fair bit.

I have Virgin HD box with L package.

I have checked all channels at different time to check for subtitle. If I am mistake – please feel free to amend it.

This channel have subtitle technology also note of warning it may have no subtitle at certain programme, certain music songs no subtitle or subtitle quality not good e.g. Sky 1-3 have delay or missing subtitle time to time.

I agree as HD subtitles is very poor and not many of it! You better off stay with SD for now!
