Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
I joined Virgin as I was with Sky and could get 1-2mb broadband speed
I joined the 10mb option and after complaining I could get little better than Sky they put me up to 20mb free for 6 months.
At present a month later I am lucky to get 3mb. I have done all the speed improvements, and spent hours on the phone. The checker services shows no one around my area with anywhere near 10mb, so me thinks Virgin are guilty under the TDA for misleading customers
One support guy did say they had a problem and were "upgrading" a fact denied by later calls - maybe I should got back to Sky, I understand by BT exchange is being upgraded in a few weeks and can guaraantee at least 10mb and maybe 20mb.
Frankly 5mb is good for me - not a lot to ask for. But why pay 20mb prices to NOT get it?

Sky's 20Mb offer is subject to line speed, how far are you away from the exchange? Also by the sound of it it's not even ADSL2 enabled yet so currently the max would be 8Mb and that's only if you're within 500-600meters of it

Re: Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
I was not aware Virgin was subject to the copout used by SkyBT about being near an exchange - VM promotes 10mb, 20mb and 50mb, someone about 3 streets away is getting 40mb so I assume is on a 50mb rate.
I doubt if I would benefit from PAYING for 50mb is they can ONLY deliver <10mb
In truth all ISPS should advertise "up to 10mb for a select few"
See how much we really get (or rather do not get) http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co....?postcode=cv22 5pn

VM isn't subject to the exchange distance, I was just suggesting that you may not get any better with Sky.
What VM is susceptable more than DSL is line problems (perhaps posting your modem stats may help). Also problematic can be congestion (does the speed drop at certain times of the day more than others)

Re: Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
I am not sure how to get Modem stats, attached is a log taken from the router which connects to the modem as a separate device.
Yes the time is a factor - busy times I have seen it <1mb and even at 4-4.30 AM (I am early riser) its still low.
Sometime it has a bout of dropping the wireless connection but re-establishes OK after just a few seconds.
I am using a new Netgear "N" router supplied new a few weeks ago. My actual usage is to my wifes laptop via Wireless network in the same room as the router, my PC uses a Netgear USB WiFi connection which is 2 rooms away in our bungalow - the PC has a "Very Low Strength" I have tried changing channels but loose it all if I do, its on AUTO normally.
Does everyone have this problem?

go to your browser and type 192.168.100.1 -> click login
use root for username and password
click on dowstream and post receive power level and SNR
Click on upstream and post power level.
Also post details from the operational config page
In particular downstream and upstream data rate.
the whole lot should look something like this
Downstream Receive Power Level : -2.8 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 40.8 dB
Upstream transmit Power Level : 47.0 dBmV
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10242000 <- If you are on 20 meb it should be 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 514000

Re: Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
Check what your speeds are with a wired connection. Wireless speeds can be seriously degraded by interference from other networks, long paths, intervening objects, etc. Sometimes the default TCP/IP settings for wireless adaptors can be far from ideal too.
Wireless is frequently better for convenience than performance.

Downstream power level too high, needs an engineer out.

Re: Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
How do you convince VM that I need an engineer out?
"Downstream power level too high, needs an engineer out" in my experience customers are "idiots" and their service is working 100%...... how do I tell a convincing story?
What should DS power level be and is a slow speed a typical symptom of it being too high?

Re: Speed 10mb, 20mb how about 2mb?
AFAIK - They can see your levels from their end, even if they can't, your levels are far too high. Power level should be between -3 and +3 ideally but this could be as high as 8 or 9. What modem do you have. Please dexcribe it or give the model number from the underside of the modem. (Think I have a theory)
