Cruise ship woman dropped into sea dies in hospital

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-13170120

Original story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-13154500

What a horrible way to die, that poor woman.

A woman from Cumbria who was dropped into near-freezing sea waters off Norway while being transferred from a cruise ship to another vessel has died.

Janet Richardson, 73, was taken ill on board the Ocean Countess and, as paramedics tried to transfer her to the lifeboat, she fell into the sea.

She was rescued after several minutes and flown to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary, where she died on Thursday.

Indeed, that is a terrible way to die. I hope it wasn't that a helicopter wasn't launched due to cost...

In fact, as someone with just a tiny amount of knowledge of mooring boats... it seems these two vessels had throttle applied at the time of the transfer and they weren't tied together.

Surely that's like trying to transfer an item between two cars, both travelling around 30mph and potentially moving away from each other during the transfer?

Apologies if that's a simplistic point of view...

They were probably still moving to try to stabilise the vessel in swells, turning the engines off leaves the boat at the mercy of the sea in more ways than one. You have to wonder why a helicopter wasn't used but then you would need to know details that only the service staff would have known at the time.

I agree, there is a lot about this that doesn't make sense to me

she was taken to a hospital in Norway from the boat but then transferred to car lisle ,that's quite a hike for someone suffering from internal bleeding and being dropped in freezing waters .The hospital in Norway would have administered some treatment to stop the bleeding but still i think given her age and the circumstances she should have been kept there a while longer
