Pop3 email with Thunderbird

Can anyone give me step by step instructions for accessing my @virginmedia.com mailbox using Thunderbird 2.0 ?

I have been trying for a month now. Another discussion with the helpline today, and still I can't receive or send. The attempt to connect times out (I tried resetting to 300 seconds, but no use). I have not been able to use Virginmedia email since the connection was installed back in December

Pleas help, someone. This is driving me insane. I am having to keep my ADSL connection, and BT phoneline going while I try to resolve this seemingly impossible puzzle.

The helpline chap reset the password for me, but that did not help.

Try this link:

http://products.secureserver.net/ema...hunderbird.htm

It should be able to take you through the process of setting up your account.

By the way, thunderbird is now at version 3, might be worth updating yours and then setting up your accounts.

Re: Pop3 email with Thunderbird

No, alas, the Thunderbird settings are much more complex.
Many thanks for the prompt reply.

Two other things

1 I can receive email from all my other POP3 mailboxes (Tiscali, Pipex, FastCo), while online via my Virginmedia cable connection.

2 I can now access my Virginmedia email via Internet Explorer (but not via Firefox). So the name of the email account is correct, and the password is correct.

I have set up many POP3 email accounts in Thunderbird.
But this one just will not work. I have followed the instructions from the helpline and everything seems to be as it is supposed to be. But it does not work.

Re: Pop3 email with Thunderbird

After using Outlook for 10+ years I recently went over the Thunderbirds and found it to be easier than outlook to configure and a hell of a lot faster.

Especially as Thunderbird 3 actually does quite a good job of automatically configuring itself..

It's worth compacting your folders now and again as this can speed things up upon Thunderbird loading - the option is within each of the folders.

Just be aware that Thunderbird 3 uses tabs so it may look different (when it has updated) this can be a little disconcerting at first.

Cheers and Si thee.

Re: Pop3 email with Thunderbird

[QUOTE=Feeble;34945364]Once again, I am saved by the knowledge and helpfulness of Moldova.

In case anyone is interested, the reason for my problem was that I was using the wrong pop3 server name, in the wrong format, and the wrong port nos on both servers, and had carefully turned off the SSL option. Otherwise, everything was fine. Apart from using the wrong password, because I didn't know the real password, which wasn't the password I had chosen, but it had been notified to me via my Virginmedia mailbox, which I couldn't access, because I didn't know the correct password.

My thanks to all. I don't know how I would have managed without cableforum and its contributors.

Re: Pop3 email with Thunderbird

updated to V3 Thunderbird in last couple of days,
but now noticed I can't send mail

now says
"sending of message failed
an error occured sending mail : unable to authenticate to smtp server smtp.ntlworld.com
The server does not support authentication (smtp-auth) but you have chosen to use authentication
untick Use name and password for that server or contact service provider"

Whilst If I do that, it does work, but since it auto updated from v2.x
I assume the same settings were in used previously in V2 ok ?

So now my TB account settings say
Secure Authentication No
Connection Security : None

So it it OK to untick User Name and password as suggested ?

Sorry - which do you have

Authentication Ticked or Unticked ?

I'll check again when I get home against
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/virg..._pop.php#76147 ( Thunderbird setting)
But this seems to indicate Password SHOULD be ticked ! - but that not working for me
