Email troubles

Hi All
New Member to virgin. I use an old program for email, simple and always works. Eudora Lite. I need help with the settings thats all
All I see on the Virgin email help on email is using NTLworld/Blueyonder, means nothing to me with Virginmedia.com's 50mb service

I dont like Outlook or similar type programs and I think its simply settings I need.

I need to know the following please:

Mail Server (Incoming)

Login Name (format required at Virgin, it used to read on my old isp as (fredbloggs-jones.co.uk)a - not a . or an @ I tried my email name ******-virginmedia.com but it did not work)

SMTP Server (Outgoing)

Any help would be appreciated
thanks
Phil

Re: Email troubles

If you know your email address and password for your @virginmedia.com email address then follow these instructions for Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Thunderbird then transfer them into Eudora where appropriate.

You have made up an alias for your email address such as fredblogz@virginmedia.com and you are not trying to use the initial one supplied that looks like ab123t4567@virginmedia.com as that will fail everytime.

Re: Email troubles

I am sorry I dont understand the reply?

Virgin never supplied me with an email. they had the sign up form with
@virginmedia.com and as requested I simply put a preffered name in front of that. I phoned support in Inida but they had no idea what a POP email system was nor the name of the incoming or outgoing server was.

I cannot cut/paste information from Outlook as the information is different

I have asked for this information how can I obtain it please?

Eudora has 5 boxes to fill in
1(Real Name)
2(Return Address)
3(Mail server Incoming)
4 (Login name)
5(SMTP server Outgoing)

I never had to put a name in option 1
Option two I put in MYNAME@virginmedia.com
3 I think is pop3.virginmedia.com
4 I put MYNAME
5 IPut in SMTP.virginmedia.com

I had trouble at my last ISP once and had to take out SSL option to NEVER USE SSL
The other options in that bit are:If Available STARTTLS, Requiree alternate Port, Required START TLS But I set it to NEVER use SSL and it worked for 6 years with never a fault.
I just clicked on check for mail a box comes up for passsword, I put new virgin email pass word and it cannot find mail server says the network is unreachable?

regards
Phil

Re: Email troubles

With this new Google system you have no option but to use SSL or it simply will not work and you have to change the POP3 server number to 995 and the SMTP server number to 465.

First check that it actually can send and receive in webmail as if it works there it will work in your email client so click HERE

Next it will probably be easier to set it up in the likes of Outlook Express. Windows Mail or Thunderbird as full instructions are available here to help set them up, then use the Import setting in Eudora to transfer everything accross and it should work.

Just click on the one you want to use under the POP section at the top of the link. http://www.virginmedia.com/help/virg...mail/4_pop.php

Re: Email troubles

I actually got through to support in the UK and spoke to a helpful chap who was expert in email programs
He knew Eudora as he has used it

I kept the server as POP3 and the email as it was I entered the actual same email name as the as I have without the format of a hash in the "log In" box.
I then set the SSL to an alternate port and the mail arrived with no problems at all.
i thankked him and finished the conversation
I could not send mail though? I solved this myself with a role of the die and by changing the smtp outgoing mailname to virgin.net instead of virginmedia.
So its all fixed now.
thanks for your suggestions though.

Now all I have to do is sort out how to cancel this day old service with irgin and return to my old ISP without legal problems.

I have never in my life had so much trouble trying to contact staff whos wages I am paying to get the installation completed to a done deal. The engineer due here today after three hours of phone calls yesterday did not even turn up!!! Why Why did I not take notice of so many complaints about Virgin. I should have realised from his Train and Plane service what I was going to get as a service from staff members
You phone a Uk number and are routed to Puna in India and you are run around for hours from person to person until you either get cut of or fed up with giving ALL your acount details to the whole population.

I wish you all the best of British as you are going to need it
regards and thanks
