NTL Cable Modem and Wireless problem

Hi,

To anyone that can shed some light for me.

I have a desktop pc connected to a cable modem via a usb connection. my desktop has no ethnet connection option. It's pretty old. But the modem does have an ethernet port.

I recently bought a laptop with built in wireless and a Linksys wirless router.

First I thought I'd just check it wired via ethernet. So I plug the ethernet cable straight from my modem to my laptop, and it doesn't work, until I unplug the usb in the modem. Then it worked.....So......

then I unplugged the ethernet from my laptop and put it into my wireless router. So far so good, everything says it's connected and fine, but I can't access the internet???

Any ideas?

Remember I can't plug an ethernet into my desktop.

Re: NTL Cable Modem and Wireless problem

You can only use USB or Ethernet separately and not at the same time and USB is no longer supported by Virgin and all new modems have only Ethernet ports fitted.

Re: NTL Cable Modem and Wireless problem

Are you assuming that once you unplug the cable from the laptop that it should automatically work wirelessly ? Thats the impression I am getting. But thats not how it works. You need to configure your wireless on your router and then scan for your network with your laptop.

I could be way off the make here but thats what it sounded like. Maybe you just missed some information out ?

Re: NTL Cable Modem and Wireless problem

You can use either the USB modem or ethernet modem, but not both together. If swapping between the two, or indeed any device connected to the modem is swapped, the modem must be rebooted.

A network card is only a few pounds. You might consider adding that to your old PC. Then you can connect your modem (ethernet) to the router and then your router wired to the PC and wireless (or wired) to the laptop.

Re: NTL Cable Modem and Wireless problem

Im not trying to use usb and ethernet together. I unplugged the usb.

Forget about the dektop, I can always just plug the usb back in and reboot everything to use that again.

all I´m concerned about is getting the wireless working. This is my set up:

I got a cable modem connected to a linksys wireless router via ethernet. (I restored the linksys to factory default by the way). Evrything seems to be ok. I can connect to the linksys router with excellent signal. I have packets sent and packets received. It picks up an IP etc etc....

But I just can´t access the net.
