10 new nuclear power station sites named
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...d-1817643.html
There's no doubt in my mind that something has to be done quick smart and this all sounds very impressive in the usual 'New Labour spin' sort of way but has it been properly thought through? Is the power really going to flow by 2018? Are the huge costs of building/running the plants and disposing of the waste just too big a price to pay? Given that this vital issue's been dodged for so long, do we now have any real choice but to go down the nuclear route, like it or not?

Well we cannot go coal fired due to a certain primeminister closing most of our working mines to prove a very costly point so looks like we now have to go nuclear.

Re: 10 new nuclear power station sites named
Nuclear power is the way forward, but I cannot for the life of my understand why the British Government will not sink money into the ongoing research into Nuclear Fusion in the UK !
We should be demanding of the morons in Westminister that they not only invest in the research at the worlds leading experimental fusion reactor, but also creating a nationally owned comapny to build, run and maintain the UK's electrical generation and distrobution for the future....
Unfortunately, as soon as the scientists and engineers get the experimantal fusion reactor running. Prove it is safe, and a viable long term money maker.... The plans will be sold to a foreign company, that will then build fusion reactors in the UK and around the world. Making massive ammounts of money from Britains scientific and engineering excellence....
Its enough to make you puke....

You see I reckon that Milliband can bang on all he likes about streamlining the planning process but I can see these applications being tied up in the UK and European courts for ages. Where would that leave us?

if you listen very carefully you can hear all the government contractors rubbing their hands together and working out how they will justify the money they will overcharge the country

I get the feeling our glorious leaders would rather like us to be kept in the dark.

The is millions of tonnes of coal left in all the old mining areas where the mines where closed and deliberately sealed with rubble and concrete to make them not cost effective to reopen and all the surface buildings demolished in most cases.
This has led to us importing the vast majority of the coal we use when we could still be self sufficient.

Would reopening these mines cost more than the £££billions involved in planning, building, running, maintaining, decommissioning and dealing with the waste of these power stations for hundreds/thousands of years I wonder?

They were sealed so that new shafts would have to sunk and surface buildings removed for political ends which never included our future.
I know which type I would prefer built.
No idea of the costs involved in reopening them plus the training that would be required.

It should be noted that most of those mines weren't profitable way back when, why should they be profitable now?
Until we get nuclear fusion sorted fission is really the only way forward. Burning more fossil fuels isn't a medium or long term solution.

Re: 10 new nuclear power station sites named
lets face it ,the mines will never re-open so we have to look forward and make a decision on what we will do
A large proportion of our power comes from abroad now including nuclear from france so why shouldn't we build our own and not be so reliant on other countries who will always use this achilles heel of ours against us at the bargaining table

Yes, one aspect of Thatcher's strategy of Scargillite emasculation which I never understood and bitterly opposed. That having been said, the costs and time involved in building these nuclear power stations is going to be huge and I'd love to see some independent figures re. the comparative costs and timescales involved in each option.
