Router causing upload to stop working and speed to slow.

Hey guys,

If I connect my modem directly to my PC with an Ethernet lead, I get the following speeds from speedtest.net:

However, if I connect my PC to my router (WNR2000) I get around a 35 ping, my download speed doesn't go higher than around 25/30mb/s and my upload doesn't work at all (It just hangs on "preparing upload test")

Now I was thinking my slow speeds were caused by virgin throttling me, but obviously as I get 50mb when directly connected to the modem, they aren't.

So I was wondering;

Do I need a new router, or is there a way to fix this router? Are the settings being used on the router to blame?

Also, my sister connects with her laptop wirelessly to the router, at the same time as I am connected to it wired. Is this a possible cause?

I'd really appreciate any help, thanks for reading.

Mack

could be that the router is load balancing automatically, or it could simply be that some of your bandwidth is being used by the other PC.

can your router give you any kind of logs to show how much traffic is going across it?

Re: Router causing upload to stop working and speed to slow.

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to connect the router in a bit and try and locate the log files.

I would expect some of the bandwidth is being used by the other PC's web browsing, but uploading literally doesn't work with the router in use on either PC, suggesting to me it is being disabled or blocked somehow by the setup?

Edit: Weirdly, now that I have reconnected the router (after being on the modem for an hour/two hours) it's working very well, 50mb down/1.6mb up etc. Perhaps it just needed a full power cycle etc, but for now I guess this issue is fixed, perhaps it will return when my relatives get back and all connect to the network again.

Would still appreciate replies as to what this issue could have been for reference in future, thanks.
