Help please V+ Brainboxes

hey there.
ive been searching how to solve this for ages and i just dont understand all the jargon! haha so im sorry im probably reposting a question for the 100th time. please use basic words

I had the old-school virgin box and the other day the virgin man came and swapped it for the new V+ box. i used to be able to view whatever was on the main tv with the box to my upstairs tv too. i think i have a splitter thing going on in the back somewhere wired through the house. it used to work fine and now i cant get any pictures at all on the tv upstairs. i havent touched anything up there and the man literally unplugged one and plugged the other in so i just simply need to know what wire should be where for upstairs to work.
or... is it because the box is connected now thru a HDMI to the tv instead of scarts?? i dont know. and is there any settings i need to change on the tv using the remote and stuff for it to work??

thanks in advance and please dont use loads of abbreviations! lol

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

If you are using HDMI output then all other outputs are disabled. The system can't do HD output at the same time as SD. You may be able to get an output from the scart output that would normally be used for archiving.

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

I believe when HDMI connection is in use you can't use the Scart connection. So if you want to watch it upstairs you will have to change the main set onto Scart and then connect the TV upstairs to the V+ Scart connection somehow. I think some sort of Scart to RF adaptor might be possible.

[edit]

And as Rob says, if you're using the Scart connection then you won't be able to watch HD.

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

lol so basicly i'm screwed ?
am i right in thinking then that if i want HD channels there is no way i can watch it upstairs too, but if i dont have HD channels and just watch tv as it is normally non HD then i should be able to watch it upstiars again if i plug it in right??
then whats the point in buying a HD box ???

my mum just said "isnt there something on ebay u can put in ur tv upstiars to recieve a signal from downstairs" as in, without more wires running through all over the house? how else can i do it and still have hd tv downstairs??
thanks, sorry for being blonde lol

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

You don't 'own' the HD box so you haven't bought it.

I'm unsure whether there is a device that would let you stream HD from the telly downstairs to the 1 upstairs. You could pay Virgin for a second V+ box if you really want HD upstairs, but it's important to note you must not buy a V+ box off ebay or similar as it won't work and is illegal.

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

What you have been told so far is not quite true.

When your main TV is connected to the V+ via the HDMI the TV SCART is indeed disabled but the VCR SCART is not. It is still enabled so that the copy to DVD function can work.

If you previously distributed your TV signal to other TVs using RF then you can continue to do this by somehow converting the VCR SCART output to RF. This can be done by using either a purpose-built SCART to RF convertor or using an old VCR.

This has been covered before on various fora if you have a SEARCH around.

I believe that the old SA V+ does not transmit the EPG through the VCR SCART but the new Samsung V+ does.

lol yeh but it cost 50 quid to have the guy take the old one and put this in.. so either way i spent money getting a new box

this is so confusing! and so stressful searching and searching. might just leave it and suggest getting my bro a freeview box for christmas lol

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

You got your answer mate, it's possible over the VCR Scart lead with an adaptor.

Or indeed any wireless video sender (will save any cable rerouting and could give you control of the remote from upstairs depending on which one you bought) If you do use a wireless sender see if you can get one on the 5GHz frequency as you may get interference if you use 2.4GHz and have a wireless network

Re: Help please V+ Brainboxes

There is a way to do this using your vcr or dvd recorder.Take out aerial leads from v+ box.Put the aerial lead into the vcr rf input - put splitter in vcr rf out, one lead to downstairs tv, other to upstairs tv.
Then use v+ vcr scart to connect to av2 scart on vcr.You should now be able to watch terrestrial programmes on tv upstairs.
To watch cable tv upstairs turn on vcr select av2 on vcr, tune spare channel on upstairs tv to vcr.
You won't get cable menus or mini guide but you should pictures,And you'll have to shout down to get the channel changed. lol.
