ipod touch virgin email
Hi,
Does anyone know how to setup an ipod touch 2G with virgin media's email?? Just I've put all the details in but it doesn't want to work. I have seen the article here about outlook, but I use vistas mail program.
Cheers

When you say 'doesn't want to work'.....would you like to give us any more details on this?
I'm going to take a wild stab and guess that it probably isn't letting you send would I be right?

Re: ipod touch virgin email
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1385 , you should have no trouble using Vista with your ipod touch. Admittedly, it does not specifically say that Windows Mail is compatible, but as I understand it, Windows Mail is essentially Outlook Express for Vista.
I think we need to know exactly what isn't working (what error messages, what is happening etc).

Re: ipod touch virgin email
Well I used iTunes to setup my virgin email before it would work properly (send) on my iPod touch.
Don't worry about it saying outlook - as long as you have it setup on your pc you should be able to sync it via vistas mail thingy too

Re: ipod touch virgin email
Looks like we all read the OP differently.
I took it to mean that the OP was having problems setting his iPod Touch up to send/receive from his VM account.
Methinks more carification is needed

Yup that's what I mean, you use iTunes to set up the iPod, but I never could get it to work manually
There was a thread about it around somewhere, but I'm too tired to hunt for it now

lol sorry about that. What I mean is that when I press Mail on the Ipod touch it asks me to setup an account.
I click on Other and put all the details of the ntlworld server and email account settings like I have on Windows mail (the same settings I have always used with just about any program I've used for emails of ntlworld) but it just shows Verifying but then states an error and asks about SSL, so I click Yes for coniuing without the SSL verify but verifying shows again and stays there. It won't connect the ntlworld server.
Well I used iTunes to setup my virgin email before it would work properly (send) on my iPod touch.

I've had the itunes program sync with Windows Mail and the ipod touch, but when I click mail it states I have to setup an email account on the ipod touch.

Re: ipod touch virgin email
Unless you're using your VM connection to access t'internet on the ipod touch, I don't think you're going to be able to access you're ntl mail that way

Re: ipod touch virgin email
I found the easiest way was to use mail application on PC to setup mail and then ask ITunes to sync the account across to the ITouch, still needed to go in and amend one of the ports in advanced settings to use the correct one my server used not 925 or something like
Hope this helps?

Re: ipod touch virgin email
Thanks for all your help for this problem. I've now got it sorted out. I found a guide for setting up the Sky email for ipod touch and followed that, but I couldn't find the imap settings, but while I was looking for that in the virgin email account, I tried the settings in the ipod touch and it worked first time.
So I tried a different account to see if it was a fluke. So I logged out of Virgin medias web mail and put the account details in. The ipod didnt work and just said failed, so I logged into the account on Virgin medias web mail and got the ipod to try again, and its verified the account straight away. So now its all working.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: ipod touch virgin email
Could you post the link you found to the instructions that worked for you, as I am having exactly the same problems - inputting all my VM details but it just won't connect, says try without SSL but that fails as well. I also have a gmail account but I get the same if I try that as well.
I can't find on my ipod touch any reference to SSL or port numbers?
Thanks in advance.

Just fixed it by syncing from my pc and it all started working fine!

Glad you got it working. Just thought to give it another try this afternoon and its worked for all accounts on ntlworld, with one slight change. The settings the Ipod touch asks you for, just put in the following:
The first settings it asks you for are:
Name, address (email), password & description.
The on the second screen, only put in the details for the pop.ntlworld.com ie the server address for POP, username & Password
But only put in the server name for smtp.ntlworld.com - the username & password dont have to be put it as its optional (just miss those as it'll use the pop settings). Then click Save and it'll verify the settings trying SSL, when that fails click on Yes without SSL. It'll maybe do this for a 2nd time, so again just press YES without SSL and it'll pass the verification.
Just takes a little time.

Have you got your email program working on the pc ?? I have noticed that if you've got a program accessing the emails from a Mac or PC the ipod wont access them. I've just tested it again and it does take around 2 or 3 tries before the settings stick.
