Email with Windows Mail on Vista
Hi,
I have just got Virginmedia and tried to set up my email client (Windows Mail) under Vista using the virgin media help pages. However, I get the following error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop3.virginmedia.com', Server: 'pop3.virginmedia.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
Virgin media requires socket 995 for incoming mail (POP3) and 465 for outgoing (smtp) I've tried other ports and various conifgurations to no avail. I even tried opening the port using Windows firewall but no luck here.
I have Sophos antivirus and Windows firewall. I don't have MS Outlook so cannot switch to that. I have used Windows Mail successfully with my prevous IP.
Since there seem to be no 'issues' listed on the virgn media pages I assume everyone is using Windows Mail successfully? Has anyone had any issues with it?
Thanks for any advice /help.
Mike

Re: Email with Windows Mail on Vista
You need to login to your email on the Virgin website, go to settings and enable pop access.

Re: Email with Windows Mail on Vista
There was an authentication issue on @virginmedia.com
You'd need to check with first line on 151 though to see if it's still an open fault.

Re: Email with Windows Mail on Vista
I just phoned 151. he said the issue with @virginmedia.com had been cleared up. He took me through the setup of the account - as I had done several times already - but nothing changed. He didn't seem to be able to go any further - just said there was a problem with my software.

Try and ring today ASAP after 0800 to try and get a UK agent who should be able to figure out your issue.
Have you tried to access webmail from the Virginmedia homepage to ensure that you can actually login using your details, click the link below and try.

Re: Email with Windows Mail on Vista
Hi, I did phone this morning (9:30) but I think I got India again. The lady was much nicer but in the end they don't seem to be able to go any further that checking my Account settings in Windows Mail (sockets nos etc). After that I could sense that we weren't going to go much further.
Thanks for all your help. I'll stick with the Webmail for the moment and try a few troubleshooting ideas.

Re: Email with Windows Mail on Vista
Hi All, just to say, that the problem has now solved itself. I ran the Norton software removal tool and after a reboot I was able to access my email via Windows Mail. This also solved another problem with my Sophos antivirus software not updating.
I had Norton antivirus on for a one moth trial but removed it with Add /remove programs in Vista. Seems like this doesn't do a thorough job. I had heard that it can leave little bits on your system. I suspect this may have been something to do with the firewall not allowing the email client to access via a specific port.
Anyway, I'm now a happy chappy once again - until the next problem comes along.
