20Meg service running at 12Meg?

OK long story short, my UBR has been oversubscribed for a long time, about 6 months and was finally looked at 3rd March. I pay for a 20Mbit service. While I am glad I now have pretty decent speed, I still don't seem to be getting 20Meg. I figured I'd test this after midnight when things are pretty clear. Date 12/03/09 00:21:59 Speed Down 12047.33 Kbps ( 11.8 Mbps ) Speed Up 719.27 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps ) Port 8095 Server speedtest1.thinkbroadband.com I also get the same results from speedtest.net and downloading from the blueyonder FTP server. I seem to be fixed at 12Mbit. Any ideas why ? Is this a fault, misconfig or something set on the UBR ?

Re: 20Meg service running at 12Meg ???

Could be UBR or could be ur system.

Try these tweeks....

Download TCP Optimizer and slide the slider to 20mb right at the end, then click optimal settings in lower right and then OK, this will auto set to what the ethernet should be....
TCP Optimizer is available here.... http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Also u can download Cyber Tweek from here....
http://www.cybertweak.co.uk/

Run the Broadband Optimzer and also enable the Ethernet Processor.

Try these first and see if it makes any difference.

Also if u try these and no difference is made and u have a router, try either upgrading the firmware or unplugging the router.

These will eliminate possible probs ur end and what could be a UBR Problem.

Have you tried hard wiring to your router and running a speed test?

I get 12mb connection on my wireless laptop but I get 19.8mb on the desktop that is wired to the router.

VM will only accept speed tests when your computer is wired directly to your modem (to eliminate your equipment as a source of the fault).

Re: 20Meg service running at 12Meg?

speed tests are not allways correct

get http://www.ie7pro.com install that at the bottom there be an new blue icon in internet explorer showing it is installed the ie7pro has an ad blocker (recommend turn that off right click blue e untick it) and an very small download manager that splits the file into 8 parts to download from the server

download file like Nvidia driver or XP SP3 download as thay are quite big and can max your download out

make sure you have no p2p apps running that are uploading (Xfire, DNA Hidden and others) when doing the above on any pc, as if you upload your download will suffer if you uploading to fast

you should be able get 2-2.4MB/s download speed in that download manager as long as the web sites can provide the speed (one of them alone is maxing my 50mb line out at 6.4MB/s at the time of posting)

Re: 20Meg service running at 12Meg?

I get around 1.7 from nvidia and 1.82MB/s from MS

i got a N1 vision and i can see my xbox does around 17mbps to 21

I am sure at my other house i can get around 2.3 on this computer :S i have no idea what the problem could be :S I have changed the settings playing around today but i am sure i changed them back when they didnt increase the speed

Are you sure it went ahead? It is very common for Virgin to set a date and then do nothing. Check the newsgroups to see how often. I've read people having up to four dates quoted and missed. It almost seems to be policy!
