Netgear WPN 824 v3 - upgrade problem

Hi Guys

I’m a newbie on this forum and would like some help with my Netgear WPN824v3. I bought this as a refurbed unit. It works fine in the sense that I can access the router to set it up etc. But the range is very poor. " internal walls over less than 12 feet defeats it completely.

I have been told that I need to upgrade it with the latest firmware. The download from the Netgear site won’t upload to the router. I get an “error wrong filename” message.

The file I have downloaded has an .IMG extension. That’s an image file isn’t it? Does anyone know if it’s the correct file for the firmware? If not, is there anywhere else I can go to download the correct firmware? Or would some kind soul have a copy of the firmware that they could forward to me?

Anyway, thanks for listening
Jonny

Re: Netgear WPN 824 v3 - upgrade problem

Hi Rob

I think that it's WPN824V3-V1.0.7_1.0.8.img . It's at
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/890 .

Hope that's helpful.

Re: Netgear WPN 824 v3 - upgrade problem

So the IMG file is the right one then? Damn. I was hoping to be told otherwise!

I wonder what I'm doing / have done wrong. I have reset the router again and again to try to get it to take the upgrade, but no joy.

The two only things I can think of are:

1. when I first got the router last week, I applied the upgrade suggested by the setup wizard - which turns out to be the US version. But I have assumed that this upgrade would be wiped by the resets. Is that right, or do I need some more fundamental reset process?

2. I'm accessing the router through Firefox3. I haven't tried IE. Would that make a difference?

Even so, I am still puzzled as to why I get a "wrong filename" message.

Thanks

Mike

PS Thanks for these speedy responses!

Re: Netgear WPN 824 v3 - upgrade problem

3 things occur to me:

1. Applying the US version may have now borked it and it will only accept US firware from this point on (no, resets won't affect the firmware);
2. You could try IE, although that shouldn't make a difference really;
3. You could download the image file again, your download could be corrupt.

Re: Netgear WPN 824 v3 - upgrade problem

Thanks for that. How odd that there's no way of clearing the US firmware - eg powering down for several hours. I had assumed that using the "restore to factory default" option in the setup page would do just that - ie clear everything back to condition the unit was in before it left the factory ....How odd.

The issue of the file being corrupted is a good point. These things can and do happen. I'll do another download; and I'll try to access the router via IE -and see what happens.

Thanks

Mike
