Laptop running costs

Odd question I know but can anyone tell me an estimated cost (appreciate different consumption and energy prices) to run a low end lap top for around 7 hours per day?

With somemfoundation for that figure obviously - I have looked but cant find and I am too think to work out!

Do you have the laptop that you are looking to find out about? If so, check the stock power supply output voltage and max current, which will be written on it. As a rough guess, the power the laptop uses when running will be between about 1/4 and 2/3 of Volts x Amps.

For example, my netbook has a 40W power supply, uses ~10W idle and 20W under full load.

Then:

Cost (in pence/day) = (Watts/1000) * Hours * Pence per kWh

The average notebook takes about 30 watts average, so use that as a starting figure. The average unit cost is about 12-14p so you can base it on a higher figure for a worst case scenario.

So for 30watts, for 7 hours a day at 14p/kWh...

£0.03 per 7 hours
£0.21 per week for 7 hours a day
£0.82 per month (28 days) for 7 hours a day
£2.47 per quarter (3 months) for 7 hours a day
£10.7 per year for 7 hours a day

Cheap as chips compared to a similarly speced desktop PC.
