Netgear Router Settings

I wanted to know what settings to use on my Netgear WNR834B router. Do I select 'up to 54 Mbps', 'up to 130 Mbps' or '270 Mbps' for a fast and stable connection. My router is connected to a VM (up to) 20mb modem.

What does 'Mbps' mean?

Thanks

Right nowI have the router set at '270 Mbps' and the internet is working fine, but will that slow my internet speed?

Should I lower the router Mbps?

Thanks

Re: Netgear Router Settings

If you only have a wireless G adaptor, theres no point in having it set to 270mbps, unless you do decide to buy a wireless N adaptor which will make full use of the router. And it will not slow your internet down .

So are you saying i should set my router to '54 Mbps', as I have 802.11b/g WI-FI on my laptop?

Thanks

Re: Netgear Router Settings

Whatever you set the router too it'll still only communicate at the speed of the slowest link, in the case of 802.11g that's 54Mbps. As your cable connection is only 20Mbps it will not slow the speed down (though wireless will increase your lag/ping slightly)

What do you mean by that? (sorry)

So it's ok for me to leave the router set at 270 Mbps, it will just go at the right speed (54 Mbps) itself ?

Cheers
