number disconnected

We have a fixed phone line as part of our Virgin bundle and the the phone has been playing up for a while. Phone rings, but when we pick up there is no-one there) and today, the problem seems to have worsened as when I ring our number from my mobile it doesn't ring and I get a number disconnected message on my mobile.
I took off the front cover of the socket outlet in the house and I cant see any loose connections.
Anything I can do or is it a case of calling Virgin?
