Virgin lag :O not unusual
Well ok for the past years vm has been in power ive been a laggy mofo on games, lag spikes etc
Well on Friday the whole 2nd half of the streets internet died, a tech came looked at the street and said basically vm hav completely wired this street wrong something like amp , temp temp whn its meant to be amp temp. Anyway he also said the parts needed replaced etc he did tht everything worked fine he came checked my speeds

Nothing wrong with those levels, might want to watch the downstream power though. Though im guessing your ex telewest, the downstream power is good for -/+ 12db.

Plus the fact the upstram rate is 256000bps and not 200000bps as it is on the NTL side  .

You can tell Telewest by the Frequency either being 331000000 or 339000000.
They only have that silly 256/2000 on 2mb for some stupid reason, but not all NTL areas are the same oddly some actually have 256!!

You'll find no difference with your connection for gaming by upgrading from M to the L package (be it to 4 Meg or if your UBR has been upgraded 10 Meg). Games just don't use a lot of bandwidth. e.g. Games like Quake 3 or 4 and Unreal Tournament 2k4 or 3 all use around 10KB/s.
I'm on XL 20 Meg and get exactly the same latency to games servers as a friend who has L 4Meg and he's about half a mile away from me on the same UBR. Now when the UBR had capacity issues, we both had problems with erratic latency, packet loss and bad download speeds.
If you really want to go down that route, upgrade to `L' package and if you don't see any improvement downgrade after 1 Month, back to your `M' package.

i took the ethernet cable and put it into the modem (instead of the router )whn i was getting lag and the lag was gone, although i had to reset the modem and my pc maybe tht made a difference?

It could well be the router causing the lag, try a direct connection for 24 hours then a connection via your router for 24 hours and if you see a difference you know its the router.

well its not tht simple as my mother and sister both use their laptops but ill try, if it is a router problem wht should i do, i know the "dos" always blocks things, ive disabled the routers firewall and i still get lag, maybe its jst the router ? ive got a belkin 54g router with 125 high speed mode

Are you trying to game over wireless? Don't bother, just buy yourself a ethernet cable and use that instead.

tbh i think it is the router any1 had any trouble with a belkin G wireless/switch the one with 125 speed mode?
