Web Design

Hi

I wanted to find out what do people here use to make their websites flashy. I have a website that I want to change its layout and colour scheme etc. In general I want to give it a modern feel. I know css will do the job for layout however I need to create the gif/jpegs for some of the backgrounds. Is there any where that one can get some insperation from?

Re: Web Design

There are a number of sites around that supposedly offer templates, you might want to for general inspiration.

I tend to find that when I find a website I like, I make a note of it. Most modern browsers have a "view source" function which allows you to see a lot of the code behind the page. That can give you a lot of ideas. Clearly you cannot just copy and paste, but why re-invent the wheel?

As for graphical stuff, take care. Increasingly web sites are being read by a variety of users including mobile ones, who have limited bandwidth. Intensive backgrounds, flashy intros, and stuff can be a complete turn off.

Re: Web Design

Hi Rob

By graphical I mean making nice modern icons for buttons and for drop down menus. I'm leaving my current brackgroun to white but I want my icons/layout to be nice like having curved edges and blend nicely with the colour scheme. any ideas?

Re: Web Design

As Rob wrote, google.... i did for some free web page designs, there are quite a lot of sites around that offer up some good basic designs, and features to add.
Plenty of button designs etc.

Quite a few "open source" web designs I game across just by searching "web + design"

My old webspace used a freebie design, as long as i kept their logo on the bottom, you could freely alter/delete or add to it.

It looked a hell of a lot flashier than me taking a lot of time to design it from scratch.

Re: Web Design

mind you some websites are in php and you wont see the full effect of the view source.....

however make up a basic site, then make 3-4 different CSS themes to suit.

then have a php or javascript(this can be turned off by the user) to randomise the image.... I just seen some how to's on php randomisation, although it is for text, but it could be the same way, I gues (little modification.)

I just used an array and used the php random to generate a number between 1 & my max then it generates a number and you pic that arrays index to show what was in that array index

as for buttons, I can't help, I am hopless at making or finding buttons, but when I find good free buttons or icons, I duely make use of them
