Virgin M Broadband upload speed?

Hi folks,

On the VM traffic management page, it's stated that the upload speed for Size M (2 Mbps) broadband is 256 Kbps. However, on checking my modem, it is reported as 200000 bps, which I calculate as 195.3125 Kbps.

Can anyone shed any light on this discrepancy?

Thanks!

Re: Virgin M Broadband upload speed?

It has been 200Kbps for a long time.

I believe however that exNTL is 200Kbps and exTW is 256Kbps.

Re: Virgin M Broadband upload speed?

So why on earth are they still advertising as 256Kbps across the board?!

Re: Virgin M Broadband upload speed?

I would guess its the same as their upto 20Mb service for those in oversubscribed areas, that stand no chance of ever getting the full rate, its all in the wordplay.

I'm pretty sure it would have been checked by their legal team, before it was published.
You can say what you like about VM, but they certainly do excel, when it comes to covering their own arses..

Part of the discrepancy is that you are incorrect with what a kilobit per second is.

IT / storage bods deal, well dealt, in binary or hex, comms bods in base 10. Kilobits are a comms measurement, and there are 1000 bits in a kilobit. Think it's just an expectation thing that broadbandings are sold in 1024k increments downstream by a lot of providers.

For some reason M on the ntl side has always been 200kbps and never 256 as it was on Telewest side. No idea at all why just one of those things. It should be standardised though, there's no excuse for not offering 256k across the board especially if they are advertising 'up to' 256kbps upload on the product when it's physically impossible to achieve that.
