Vista 64bit Home Premium to SB5100 Motorola Modem problem

I'm currently having problems getting my old Telewest cable modem
to work with windows vista premium 64bit. I have a motorola SB5100 cable
modem which works with my laptop which has vista business 32bit using
the usb cable. I have downloaded drivers from the motorola website to
try to solve the problem but they have been unsuccessful. I have also
tried to connect the modem via ethernet cable and this unfortunately is
unsuccessful also. However when i have tried to connect using a netgear
modem at a different location this worked fine using an ethernet cable.
i therefore believe that there is a compatability issue between the
SB5100 cable modem and Vista Home Premium 64bit. If you could kindly help me in
this matter it would be greatfully appreciated

When switching between USB and Ethernet, you need to power cycle the modem (switch the modem off at the mains, wait a couple of seconds and power it back up) otherwise you will not be able to connect.

Have you done this?

No, didn't switch the modem off. I really do hope it is that simple. In anticipation, many thanks for the tip.

The USB drivers do not work with Vista you can only connect a Virgin modem via an Ethernet cable to a Vista machine, and everytime you swap devices you must unplug the modem.

My SB5100 works perfectly on Vista.

From the information I can find on the Internet, the SB5100 is not compatible with 64bit versions of Windows.

When you run an x64 version of windows the hardware manufacturers need to write different drivers to the normal ones and with older hardware they generally don't bother.

So as mentioned, you'll have to use Ethernet.

It aint they general don't bother more the fact a lot of older hardware was not designed to work in 64 bit artichure esicpally older hardware that was first written for 8 and 16 bit machines. i believe the usb part of the modem was designed for 16 bit machines and got a 32 bit driver eventally but 64 bit it jsut wouldnt do.

But i aint saying you aint right baout 32bit stuff but they general cant for odler hardware.
