Netgear 624v4 using a cable

Hi I have a desktop pc that is connected by eternet cable to my Motorola modem
I have bought a Netgear Router 624V4 that I want to connect my desktop still using a cable.....dont need this to be wireless.
........Reason for the Netgear is am getting a laptop.
Is there an idiots guide to connecting and setting up the Netgear Router from the Motoroal modem to my desktop as I'm worried if I disconnect everything I wont be able to get connected back to the www.
Thanks for any help.............yes it is a very basic question !!
