NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations.

Looking for it for 50 years? Anyone have any ideas?

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
Finally a reason to justify its constant deficit-spend?

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
I know they are looking for a super-massive black hole, apparently every Galaxy has one, but I don't think they even suspected such objects existed 50 years ago! Could it be a pulsar?

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
I actually think it's something to do with Dark Matter, they've been searching for that for years.

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
Note how 'massive' (or even important/significant and other words to that effect) feature in the thread title only. It could be an asteroid that went missing 50 years ago...
Regarding dark matter: The press release mentions 'an object in our galaxy'

Makes you wonder why NASA would schedule a media teleconference to announce a discovery made by/through support of the European Space Agency, when said discovery has already been published in 'Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters' and has been commented on by ESA.

Indeed but i really cant think what else it could be, apart from ufo/alien types of things...and even if they had found that i doubt it would be released publically.
There is some hints going about it's something to do with black holes though...

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
I wonder if any of the american presidential candidates is known for being pro-NASA and this is a stage-managed publicity stunt to benefit them both.....a bit far fetched I guess but for anyone who has read Dan Brown's Deception Point you'll know what I mean....

Obama wants to cut funding to NASA and redirect it to science education in schools so I reckon it's not aimed at him.

Re: NASA To Announce Massive Discovery
Jimmy Hoffa?
It can't be that exciting or revolutionary if they have scheduled the press release so far in advance.
