Best deal at the mo?

My friend is moving to V+ from Sky and figuring out best deal

He wants V+ @ £75

TV XL, Sky Sports & Phone (no BB) - Any ideas on best way to buy?

P.S. Thinking about myself now - I notice VM are doing 3 for £20 at the mo - that's excellent price but is it ongoing or will it expire? - i can't see any mention?

Re: Best deal at the mo?

£48 a month is the standered price for the M phone package, XL TV and Sky Sports

The reason the price is so high is because of the Sky Sports package it adds another £18 to the bill

The irony is the more services you take, ie: broadband, tv, phone, the better the deal VM will offer, it might be worth your friend thinking about VMs broadband as well, unless of course his tied in to an exiting contract.

Thats exactly what my Dad found when he got his first Internet account.

Before:
XL TV, M Phone, Sky Sports.

After:
XL TV, M Phone, M Broadband, Sky Sports.

Price difference was about 50p at the time and I think it was actually cheaper.

Re: Best deal at the mo?

I'm semi-tied into Virgin as (a) I dislike Sky as an operator marginally more than I do Virgin, (b) because I already have their broadband, cable tv and telephone and (c) I don't want a dish stuck up on my house.

Given those factors, I'm just finally updating my telly (it's been credit crunch round here over the past year!), and getting an HD flatscreen at last, for the sitting room. It seems to me that there's not much available on Virgin via their cable that's HD compatable. In fact, is there anything?

Woefully low, I suspect. Therefore I have to go also to the V+ option, which scares me a bit, having read the thread concerning it.

What deal should I get? We've subscribed to them for over ten years. They get a lot of our money as we have all packages apart from the porn option with telly.

It rather hacks me off that I might have to pay an extra premium to see programmes in HD that Sky people get to see included in their ordinary package. Also, is BBCHD available on Virgin Cable, if so, on what channel number?

Forgive me for posting here as a newbie - I'm not, really, I had an old user name in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and I've forgotten it.

Re: Best deal at the mo?

... re Whicker (above -post) - similar experience - 10 years Cabling-TV-phone-BBand 5 years ago.

Quite happy with 4:3 CRT, then decided to give V+/flat-widescreen a go Jan. 2008.

V+ PVR is jolly good - only 1 BBC HD channel on part of day - occasionally shows fine material quite well.

I have concluded (having also Blu-Ray) that all of this Hi-Def 16:9 if you're lucky (films are c. 22-24:9...) is a big con, but I like Cable/hate Murdoch-dishes/have managed to pay for Sky Sports only for 1 month in 10 years (to see League Cup Final in 1998).

The quality of much TV broadcasting is quite adequate even on the much-savaged Freeview SD in my experience.

Often the V+ output is very good upscaled from SD.

It is the quality of the TV programme that counts, not whether you can see in HD that Man Utd are penalty-kings.

On another V+ forum people were rabbiting on about Indy Jones in HD - I watched on V+ 1st great sequence till Jonesie was out of stone-ball cave/into 'plane - it was fine - just as good as via my ordianry DVD upscaled from PS3 Blu-Ray m/c into good TV (which is in fact no better than my Beta and VHS Indy tapes into good CRT).

IMO it's all a capitalistic marketing con like everything, but I'm happy to pay for V+ as best PVR with occasional option of comparing that HD is often not significantly more worthwhile than SD...

Some 'HD' content was in fact broadcast last week with no HD logo (hooray.. fortunately I deliberately chose anyway not to have screen burn-in plasma). and IMO/that of people watching with me the prog was NOT HD (Dan Cruikshank's architecture thang last Tuesday)...

I don't know what the best deal is currently - I ring up weekly to try to blag good one for Sky (ugh) Sports, but fortunately no luck, and footie season almost over again - (come on The (Samsung & all of the other) Blues).

'Sometimes via the senses, mostly in the mind' (and/or pocket).

Re: Best deal at the mo?

Thanks for replying, Charlie. I just got the hd ready tv delivered today, which is rather exciting, and I've ordered the V+ box to be delivered on Friday.

To go back to Jethro's friend; I paid £75 upfront on the plastic over the telephone because I have the XL package, and there are no further charges for the service, and as they upgrade, so do I.

I rather doubt whether any company these days gives old customers a better deal than new ones (strangely enough, you'd think loyalty counted for something - but not any more! Therefore I dare say your friend could get that or perhaps even a better deal.

I do think that they are open to a bit of haggling, in a good natured way! I didn't haggle, so startled was I to discover that I didn't have to pay a monthly charge and I rather expected the initial installation charge to be in the region of £150. Perhaps I should have tried!

Re: Best deal at the mo?

I was paying £36 p/m just for 4meg BB & standard phone.

Tried several times to get some knocked off, but all the spl offers were 'only for new customers'

Last week tho, I decided to go for the 3 for £30 bundle - which IS available to all.

The deal was 2meg BB, standard TV and phone with free uk w/e calls.

To be fair, when I tried my hand I got XL TV, kept my 4meg BB (which will shortly be 10meg), free w/e and evening calls.
I had to pay the £75 for the V+ box and the service is in with XL (otherwise its another £5 p/m)
The monthly on that is £38 and they've thrown in HDMI cables for when I get an HDTV.

Its worth mentioning the BT ADSL BB is (apparently) abysmal compared with cable

Thought V+ for £75 was another "new customers only" thing - were you renting V+ prior to this?

Re: Best deal at the mo?

No, I was on a freeview box.
These offers seem to be available provided you're taking another service - so as I was acquiring TV, I got the deal (plus a bit extra by being a bit cheeky)
I don't get the V+ installed till this Saturday, but it's been heartily recommended by a couple of colleagues
