8GB memory problem

I have just installed 8GBs of OCZ HPC Reaper PC2-8500 memory on my XP x64 based machine.

It seems that whenever I use over 4GBs of memory, the system encounters weird errors; the screen will often go grey with a mouse pointer or complain. The sticks are NOT overclocked, and the system is stable (tested with Orthos).

I have tried the sticks individually and they work fine in each slot.

I tested it simply by opening lots of browser windows - could this be the reason and if so, is there a more reasonable way of testing all 8GBs?

try running memtest ...

what vdimm are you running and what does it require ?
also what are the ram timings ?
and does it do the same thing if you slow the cpu down?

what on earth do you need 8gb for though! and on an aside what bore tubing are you using for the water cooling ?

I'm running auto voltage, BIOS reports around 2.24, memory requires 2.1. I've tried other voltages too though.

Timings are 5-5-5-15 I believe.

Does exactly the same thing when I slow the CPU down.

The tubing I'm using is very slim, 8mm I believe. I'd like to get some thick tubing for it, I'm just not sure where to source it.

if i remember right when you overclock a q6600 the more ram you have the less stable it becomes at higher speeds, i cannot get any further than 3.0ghz with 4gb of ocz reaper 800mhz it just wont post if i take 2gb out then i will oc to about 3.6ghz but 3.0ghz is fine for me. only thing i could suggest is either try it with just 4gb or lower cpu to 3.0ghz and try it, and see if it still does the same thing

Some M/B's require EEC Registered RAM to use more than 4gig, worth a check.

I had a problem with my abit ip35 pro board using 4gb of ocz reaper 800mhz could never run 4gb had to stick to runing 3gb every time i put the fourth stick in(no matter which order) i had errors spent weeks on abit forums and OCZ.Works 100% with 3gb

Isnt Windows only going to see half of it anyway or has that been sorted out with Windows XP 64 ?
I thought that this amount of Ram coudnt be used properly by Windows.

Should mostly be visible, as there is much more address space available on a fully 64 bit system... but still some mapping issues.

32Bit vs 64Bit. 32Bit maxes out near 4Gb, 64Bit maxes out near... Actually i dunno, seem to remember 1024Gb for some reason.

You don't need that much RAM especially for XP, anyway.

*wonders weather to get more ram* as your runnin windows xp 64bit then I am stuck on why however wait for master zingle he will be able to use the force and help you.

Theoretically, 16 EB (exabytes!) are addressable, but I imagine you might run into other issues before you get to that (cost, perhaps

hmm, well, it seems to have resolved itself. Though now I'm having trouble getting the same speed out of the CPU as before. I can run 8GBs of memory at 1066Mhz (stock), with the Q66 at 3.6Ghz at 100% load for maybe an hour before it crashes.

I think the NB is getting too hot now. I'll probably have to source another loop for it.

that is nothing unusual .If you look over at OCUK the more ram you have the less overclock you achieve. Although someone who fully researched his project would have course known this

No offence mate buy why are you running 8 gig anyway? are you running a server off it or something>?

I was aware it would have some impact on the speed I get. But I decided to try it and see anyway
