7 core wire

I have recently bought a new house and I have a phone cable running into this house but the problem is it's got 7 separate wires inside the cable. Three red, a white, a black , a green and yellow. Does anyone know what wires I need to use to connect a phone cable to it. Thanks

Re: 7 core wire

Are the three red made of a different wire.?If they are you can cross those of your list, they are for strengthening the cable.

Re: 7 core wire

When you say "New" house, do you mean the house is new, or just new to you, as that wire does not sound like any standard phone wire from the last 25 years.

Indeed. Should be in pairs - 2 or 3. Could be alarm cabling, possibly

Re: 7 core wire

There is a odd number of wires,BT use a Black 2 pair cable with reinforcing strands for overhead wireing.

Re: 7 core wire

Hang on, are you saying that you want to wire in your own telephone instead of getting BT in to do it? If the line hasn't been in use yet then it's probably not live, have you called BT about this?
Info about wiring here
http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm
but you would be better off finding out if the line is actually live and working properly before tampering with it just in case. You could even get a master socket etc installed by BT without too much fuss.
Another question is why is this in VM installation issues??

Re: 7 core wire

slysi, it sounds like you'd be better off geting a Telephone company (such as Virgin or BT) in to install the phone. If necessary, they can perform any upgrades/changes needed.

Re: 7 core wire

this is a verry old color code what you have is 3xred strengthening wires, the yellow wire started off as orange and has faded over the years so code is pair 1 orange /white....orange=a leg white =b leg........ pair2green/black..green=a leg black = b leg . [ in modern cables white is a leg but way back in time it was the b leg]

Re: 7 core wire

Many thanks Papa Smurf, for others like me who need it spelt out even simpler, on a main socket this is: 2-white, 3-black, 4-green, 5-orange and lose the reds.

Re: 7 core wire

On the replacement wire bt fitted for us it is multi core but only blue/white and white/blue are used, these fit into screw fitments not like the idc ones they used to use.

Re: 7 core wire

LOL! Mate - I think I know your problem. What you have is a master socket and you have some extensions running from the one socket .

Re: 7 core wire

I think you will find that that wire could have been for rediffusion cable. Quick way of checking does it come from just under your guttering in a box?
