Which Router
Hello, I need go from a STB to a cable modem for the 4MB to 10MB upgrade that is coming soon. Can someone please recommend a good router to buy, I'd like to connect a laptop now and again as well as my main comp. Never having to bother with routers before I've not much idea which are the good and the ones to avoid.

Re: Which Router
I bought a Netgear WGR614. Didn't know until i got to the shop that it had to be a cable router. Helpful bloke in shop for a change. He has installed loads of wireless networks he said, and actually talked me out of the more expensive Belkin one cos he said "they are crap", his words not mine. I got it from Staples for, i think £40 comes with wireless dongle. works great for me but there may be better out there. I managed to set it up after a few probs but up and running great now. I live in quite a big house and it is in front bedroom but works wirelessly to my laptop at top of 30ft back garden. I am connected to my desktop by the ethernet port on back of router (4 available).

Re: Which Router
Callumpy, on your link it does say on the top line of description cable or ADSL it doesn't say broadband. Dunno if that makes a difference cos i am not techie minded but i know it works with my set up. I have set top box at the moment connected to router by ethernet wire from downstairs up to bedroom then wire from router to desktop computer ethernet again (supplied) and wireless to my laptop with included dongle.
Can only say that it works for me but don't know enough to say i'd recommend it.

Re: Which Router
I think for the WGR614 you do need a Ethernet modem pluged into the the Internet port on the WGR614 (obviously via ethernet) and then it acts as a wireless acess point and it has firewall and all the other stuff in you need!
Here is my Network layout:

Re: Which Router
The engineer is coming Saturday to install the new modem for me so now i need to think about this router. I mentioned i would be at some point connecting a laptop as well as my main comp and i will almost certainly be online gaming on them both so is this router overkill for what i want to do

To get the full 300Mbps wireless on that you will need a hell of a WLAN card, and also why do you need 300Mbps?
